– Alex, Staglands’ Dorset Horn ram lamb does his part for the future gene bank

Our Dorset Horn ram lamb, Alex, went on an important road trip recently, to the Tararua Breeding Centre to have semen collected for the Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand gene bank.
This work is part of a vital initiative by them to create an insurance policy for rare heritage livestock. So, if the worst ever happens, these precious genetics won’t be lost forever.
As a registered stud for Dorset Horned sheep, we are proud to play a role in protecting the future of this remarkable breed.
Conservation isn’t just about wildlife – it’s about safeguarding the living history in our paddocks too. So here’s to Alex, doing his part for the next generation.

– Be on the lookout for fake weather forecasts on social media

MetService is warning that fake AI-generated weather maps on social media could cause confusion during real emergencies.
Meteorologist John Law said inaccurate charts can create unnecessary alarm, downplay genuine risks, and undermine trust in official forecasts.
Upper Hutt weather watcher Daniel Talbot said he has recently seen more AI-generated “rubbish” weather maps from unknown Facebook accounts that some users appear to believe. Talbot runs Wellington Severe Weather Reports, has about 90,000 followers, and shares data from a crowdfunded Upper Hutt weather station with MetService.
One page he criticised, NZ Chronicle, posted maps that MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan said did not match actual weather and misused standard map symbols and colours. The page also listed contact details belonging to a Wellington hotel, which said it had no connection and reported the page to Facebook.
Law urged people to verify maps against official sources, watch for obvious errors and alarmist language, and avoid sharing fake weather posts.

– Local youth take centre stage at 2026 Ngā Tohu Whakanui Rangatahi

A palpable sense of community spirit and high-energy programme made for a special atmosphere at last week’s awards ceremony for the 2026 Ngā Tohu Whakanui Rangatahi | Youth Awards.
Hosted at Te Kupenga o Rongomai Maidstone Sports Hub, the event highlighted and celebrated the many different ways in which Upper Hutt’s rangatahi (teenagers, young people) shape their schools, clubs, teams, and wider community.
Jane Braun, Council’s Community Partnerships Manager, noted the breadth of talent and dedication, evidenced by a record 43 nominations across five categories.
“It’s inspiring to see this outpouring of recognition for our local youth. They are leading and supporting one another, creating and making the most of opportunities together, and showing up for their communities every day,” she said.
She also extended special thanks to the award sponsors (Whirinaki Whare Taonga, Mangaroa Farms, Rimutaka Lions Club and Silverstream Lions Club, Youthtown, and NZCIS), and to Kickstart for helping shape the ceremony’s programme and being a big contributor to the delivery of the event on the night.
Arama Adair was acknowledged for his commitment to kapa haka and creative cultural leadership, as were Sophie Hannah for her role in environmental kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and Igor Cherniavtsev for his dedication to community service.
Zoey Hall received an award for her personal resilience and mentorship of younger peers, while softball athlete Tyrone Robinson won the sport and active participation category.
Mayor Peri Zee added to the celebration with a mayoral award for Ruby Armstrong, who has repeatedly put the city on the map as a powerlifting champion.
“In Upper Hutt, we back our rangatahi. Their ideas, their energy, and their willingness to step up, play a big part in what makes this city so strong. The awards are a chance to come together and celebrate that,” she said.

The second main act are –

Neil Billington is one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of the harmonica. Equally at home playing in the ‘Chicago-style’ of Little Walter on the blues harp or reflecting the more sophisticated jazz sensibilities of Belgian jazz great, Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans, on chromatic harmonica, Neil has played on international stages with some of the world’s finest blues musicians, like Louisiana slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and has played with many of New Zealand’s finest jazz and blues musicians at gigs and festivals around the country. He has also performed regularly up the coast with his old friend and local identity Andrew London as part of the former Hot Club Sandwich.
Wellington singer songwriter Cindy Muggeridge draws heavily from boogie-woogie, the blues piano of Otis Spann and the New Orleans sound of Doctor John. She regularly performs with her own band, the Raven Mavens Quartette, and is known as Wellington’s own ‘Queen of the Boogie Woogie Piano’, with fans coming from far and wide to hear songs she has written, and the covers she chooses to play.

– Rare, Endangered, and Overlooked – Help Give Our Lizards a Future

Upper Hutt Forest & Bird is exploring an exciting opportunity to support native biodiversity by helping establish a local/national sanctuary for indigenous lizards (skinks and geckos). This idea was recently presented by Upper Hutt City Councillor and Deputy Mayor Corey White at its April Forest & Bird meeting, where it generated strong interest. The proposal reflects a growing recognition within Council of the importance of protecting our unique native species. It builds on the remarkable work of Dennis Keall in Wainuiomata, who has spent more than 40 years breeding native reptiles (from around Aotearoa) for conservation under a Department of Conservation permit. His work is especially critical for highly endangered species such as the Whitaker’s skink – now on the brink of extinction, with only around 50 individuals surviving in captivity and none recorded in the wild at its last known site since 2010. Maintaining and expanding programmes like this is essential, as these species face slow breeding cycles, tiny populations, and ongoing threats from predators and habitat loss.
As Dennis begins to step back from this intensive mahi, there is a real opportunity for Upper Hutt to play a role in continuing and strengthening these vital conservation efforts. We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals, community groups, iwi, conservation organisations, landowners, and potential partners who would like to be involved. This could include contributing expertise, supporting endangered species breeding programmes, or helping identify a suitable site for a future sanctuary -potentially one that could support the long-term goal of establishing secure, predator-free habitats for reintroduction. If you are passionate about protecting Aotearoa’s most vulnerable species, would like to help shape this initiative, or simply be part of an ongoing discussion to see where you could assist, please get in touch with Barry Wards, Upper Hutt Forest & Bird (UpperHutt.Branch@forestandbird.org.nz), to register your interest or learn more.
For further information, please read the article, Skinks on the Edge published in the Jul-Sep 2000 issue of New Zealand Geographic (https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/skinks-on-the-edge/). The article explores the fascinating world of New Zealand’s native skinks while highlighting their dramatic decline from once-abundant species to animals now under serious threat. The article underscores how predation by introduced mammals and habitat loss have pushed many skinks toward the brink, while also pointing to emerging conservation efforts aimed at securing their future.
A “thank you” to Barry Wards for sending this article to The Upper Hutt Connection.

– Trial underway at Silverstream Landfill to recycle asbestos into a cement-like material

A three‑week trial at Silverstream Landfill is testing a new process that destroys asbestos fibres and turns them into a cement‑like by‑product. The trial uses Environment Decontamination Limited’s mechanochemical destruction reactor, which mills asbestos with high‑intensity metallic balls to break down its crystal structure into fine powder.
The test is the first outside a laboratory. It will measure feed rates, material hardness, and the size and type of milling balls. Samples of the resulting powder will be analysed overseas to assess its suitability as a construction material or cement replacement.
Most New Zealand councils currently bury asbestos. The only established method to neutralise it is high‑temperature melting. EDL says its mechanical process uses simpler systems, requires far less energy, and produces a usable material.
The company has worked with asbestos since 2016 and drew on experience from nuclear waste and PFAS projects. Silverstream was chosen for its infrastructure and ability to host controlled pilot trials.
Lower Hutt mayor Fauono Ken Laban described the work as innovative and said the trial could change how asbestos is managed. He said the operation is contained within the landfill’s asbestos cell, using decontamination units, negative‑pressure systems and HEPA filtration to ensure safety.

– Upper Hutt Libraries set to join regional SMART network

Upper Hutt Libraries is getting ready for the next big chapter: starting 26 May 2026, its members will enjoy access to more than 600,000 titles thanks to the SMART libraries network.
Joining SMART means Upper Hutt Libraries will integrate its catalogue with Hutt City, Porirua, Kāpiti Coast District, Masterton, Carterton District, and South Wairarapa District Libraries. A comprehensive catalogue and computer system upgrade completed in June last year paved the way for this milestone.
Upper Hutt Libraries Manager, Denise Clarkson, emphasises the significant boost to the range and diversity of content about to become available to members – and that access to the Upper Hutt collection will in turn benefit the wider region.
“We can’t wait to launch the full SMART catalogue for our community. Customers across the region will be able to explore and make use of an incredible treasure trove of library items,” she says.
Improving access to collections and information isn’t the only advantage of joining the network. The catalogue integration will bring unparalleled convenience to everyone who lives, works, and travels across the region. Under the SMART model, members can use a single library card to borrow items from any participating branch and return them to whichever location is most convenient for them.
Mike Ryan, Upper Hutt City Council’s Group Manager Community Services, highlights the strategic value of this collaboration.
“This is a fantastic example of councils working together to deliver added value and improved services for our residents,” he says.
“No matter how you travel – commuting for work, visiting family and friends, or simply enjoying what the region has on offer – your local library travels with you, thanks to SMART. It’s a modern and customer-focused approach to delivering services to our communities.”
Work is currently under way to transition the Upper Hutt Libraries catalogue into the SMART network. Members will be able to continue using their existing library cards, and staff will be available to assist customers in navigating the expanded regional catalogue from 26 May 2026.
A “thank you” to Upper Hutt City Council for sending this article to The Upper Hutt Connection.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
– Tiaki Wai, Why – Teresa Homan

My apologies to council I was pretty miffed at their decision to hand over our water assets and services to combined Wellington regions water corporation Tiaki Wai and suggested their pay be docked. I want to be on record as saying that while I don’t agree with their decision I believe they are all working for the best of our community. It is my opinion though that this decision was made with background noise they are finding it difficult to block out from central government edicts and the real concern that without good water management they could be opening up our water system to contamination as happened in Hastings.
My real concern is they are losing control of our local water at our expense and under duress, of government who know that clean water is the scarcest natural resource in the world. Getting control over our clean water opens the door to water bottling for profit at the least locally, who knows nationally. If this was to share in some way with those across the World dying for want of clean water, then I have no problem with it. But it is like all things if our natural resource can be exploited by business for profit, they will and we the locals will pay for their access to it.
If you think it impossible remember the old coke a cola factory that had “consent” to bottle water for sale. My concern we are all being played, council, water users alike. The question remains who owns not the water but access to it, and who pays for that access. And how do we pay, volumetric water metering financially restricting our access to water, wai, why? We need to encourage Council now, to block out the noise regarding Amalgamation and listen to their community.
A “thank you” to Teresa Homan for sending this letter to The Upper Hutt Connection.

– Upper Hutt Petanque Club Autumn Leaves Tournament 2026
This tournament was held at Maidstone Park on Sunday 24th May after having been postponed from 12th April due to a cyclone threat. Although the start was autumnal, the sun shone all day making the cool northerly bearable. 32 entries from around the Wellington region participated, with a couple being shared entries to cater for those unable or unwilling to play 5 full games. The format was 50 minute games with no extra end unless as a tie-breaker, and 3 games were played before lunch. The afternoon was markedly cooler due to the wind but everyone was wrapped up tight.
- The unluckiest player was Chris Wood from Masterton, who took home a goody bag donated by Summerset Retirement Homes.
- 3rd place was won by Graeme Pilcher from Masterton, with 4 wins and a differential of 25.
- 2nd place was won by Bruce Stephenson from Naenae, also with 4 wins but a differential of 30.
- 1st place was won by John Pryer, also from Masterton, also with 4 wins, but a differential of 31, making it a very close finish indeed.
The three winners all took home cash prizes, and the $50 raffle was won by Adrienne Gwerder from Upper Hutt.
Thanks to all the helpers, food donors, and participants, and hearty congratulations to all the winners.

– Weekend football results: Saturday 23rd of May / Sunday 24th of May
Big weekend of football across the club – here are some of the highlights.
Men’s 1st grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win against Phoenix Reserves, Men’s 3rd with a 2-0 win against Lower Hutt AFC, and the Tin-Men absolutely turning it on under the lights with an 8-0 win against Marist. The Marauders also picking up a 3-2 win against Karori – solid Saturday all round.
Special mention to our women this weekend. Women’s 1st with a well-deserved 2-1 win against Vic Uni Reserves – a big part of that story being Jade Wood stepping up from the Reserves into the 1st squad in goal, and Grace Fyvie continuing to push hard after her debut last weekend. This is exactly the kind of development pathway we love to see. The Reserves earning a point with a 2-2 draw against Lower Hutt AFC, and Women’s 3rd playing away and down in numbers but still pushing hard – real heart shown there.
TDP rounding out the weekend nicely too – U14 and U15 both with 2-1 wins, and the U17s battling to a 4-4 draw against Petone.

– St. Hilda’s Anglican Church

Location: 35 Cruickshank Road, Clouston Park, Upper Hutt
Email Church Office: sthildasuh@gmail.com
Who we are:
A congregation of faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ, who draw on the Anglican
tradition to support a lively expression of our faith. Our recently unanimously agreed
vision statement is: St Hilda’s – a vibrant, faith-based presence within our community.
What we do:
- We are a community of people who come together to worship God, to grow in relationship with one another and with the wider community.
- We offer loving service to God, one another, the people of Upper Hutt and the world.
- We are disciples of Jesus, the Lord of Love.
- We believe in the Christian Creator, Redeemer and Giver of Live. We are inspired andguided by the Holy Bible. We seek to grow in faith.
- We welcome newcomers to our parish family with warm hospitality. We provide a wide range of activities, both spiritual and secular. We encourage all to develop their relationship with Christ through our worshiping community.
- In recent years we have turned our focus outwards to serving our community.
Weekly services:
Sunday 9.30am: Traditional NZ Anglican Worship
This is a comfortable, family-friendly feeling service, although it follows the traditional
liturgical format. The service order alternates between the three ANZPB Eucharistic (communion)
liturgies. There is always a sermon with a liturgical assistant leading the worship; when a priest is not available. The communion is led by one of our leaders licenced for reserved sacrament.
Thursday 10.00am: Traditional Communion Service
The service order follows ANZPB with the Sunday sermon being repeated here. Our services are supported by a good tech suite, including two large monitors installed at the front of the church, and a quality sound system.
Prayer books remain available in the pews for anyone who prefers to use them

– Silverstream Reformed Church

Location: 8 Blue Mountains Road, Silverstream
What we Believe:
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and the Sovereign Lord over all of life. We are fully committed to the Bible in its entirety as the Word of God. We believe that theology is important, it is vital for the health of the church, and without sound doctrine the church decays. Throughout history, the church has confessed what it believes by faithfully summarising the truths of the Bible in written forms known as creeds and confessions. These confessions do not hold the same authority as the Bible, but they help to summarise the Bible’s teaching. Ultimately, the Bible remains our only rule for faith and life.
Who we Are:
Our Church is a family church, with a mixture of young families, retirees, couples, single people and youth. We have approximately 200 members, from different backgrounds, meeting together because we share a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
Service Times:
Our worship services are on Sunday at 10 AM and 4 PM, and we would love to see you there. Our friendly greeters will meet you at the door and answer any questions you have.

But the church is primarily about people, relationships, and recovery day by day, wherever we live. Our focus is on faith, family, and care for others.
What we do: We seek to nurture our faith, our relationship with God, in various ways. First and foremost, we come to worship and pray together. The Parish seeks to provide a variety of styles of worship to suit the varying needs of parishioners. Our Sunday inter-generational service unites families, young and old, in the church, while our children’s program (Godly Play) offers meaningful spiritual education for our tamariki. We gather for morning tea in and around the entry foyer afterwards.

In addition to the Sunday service, there are other opportunities for worship during the week, such as the Wednesday 10am Holy Communion. This is in the church and uses one of the services in A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare. We gather for morning tea in the foyer afterwards.
Weekdays 7.00am: Morning Prayer
Morning Prayeris held in the church chapel every weekday morning at 7am. We use A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare, but there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to join the time of intercession and thanksgiving at the end of this service. All ages are welcome.
