Last week Kevin Ronald Bishell was sentenced in the Hutt Valley District Court. Bishell was stopped by police at a petrol station in Upper Hutt, in January last year. When inspected, it showed that his license had been suspended, and searching his vehicle, the police found a backpack in the front passenger footwell containing 6.8g of methamphetamine and 15.9 grams of cannabis plant. He also had other drug-related, and other suspect equipment, along with $2000 in cash. After being checked by the police he acknowledged he was not meant to be driving.

Bishnell was ultimately sentenced to nine months of home detention, disqualified from driving for one year, and an order was made for the destruction of the drugs and drug-related utensils.

We are wrapping up the Harcourt Park Paddling Pool season on 26 March.

It was great to once again see many in our community still showed up, splashed hard, and made the most of it on the few sunny days we had!

The Splash Pad and Paddling Pool will be closing for the season from Thursday, 26 March, so if you want to get one last water play in, you have two more days!

Off‑road construction is about to begin on new average speed safety cameras on State Highway 2 in Upper Hutt, aimed at reducing the risk of serious crashes on this busy stretch of road.

The work follows the announcement in November that Upper Hutt would be one of several locations around New Zealand where average speed safety cameras are being rolled out.

One camera will be in Te Mārua and another in the suburb of Brown Owl, about four kilometres to the west.

Average speed cameras measure how long it takes a vehicle to travel between two points. Drivers are only ticketed if they pass both cameras, and their average speed between them is over the limit. 

Chris Rodley, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) Head of Driving Regulation, says the cameras will help reduce the number of people being killed or seriously injured in crashes on this section of State Highway 2.

“Fourteen people died or were seriously injured in 12 crashes on this stretch of road between 2015 and September last year.”

“Evidence shows this risk can be reduced if people drive to the speed limit. By installing average speed safety cameras here we can encourage that – and if crashes do occur, the risk of death and serious harm is less. People do make mistakes on the roads. This is about reducing the consequences of those mistakes,” Mr Rodley says.

He says cutting crash rates brings other benefits as well.

“Crashes can close a road for hours at a time. Fewer crashes mean fewer road closures, and more consistent and reliable travel times. This is particularly important for this section of State Highway 2 where no local road detours are available, and a serious crash can completely sever access between Upper Hutt and Wairarapa.”

“A speed survey in June 2025 showed 81 percent of drivers were speeding on this section of State Highway 2. That is the highest percentage of all 17 sites around New Zealand where average speed cameras are being installed,” Mr Rodley says.

The cameras will begin operating later this year, with the date to be announced in the coming months.

Initial construction work is scheduled to begin on 23 March and take about three weeks. Crews will lay foundations, connect underground power supplies, and complete other enabling works. Traffic management will be place, including temporary reduced speed limits during work hours, but there should be little impact on road users.

Further work will be carried out in stages over the coming months, including installing poles, setting up the cameras, and putting up “average speed camera area” signs.

Mr Rodley says average speed safety cameras are widely used overseas and are being introduced throughout New Zealand.

“There is strong evidence that they could reduce deaths and serious injuries on suitable New Zealand roads by about 50 percent.”

“We’re seeing speeds come down where other average speed cameras are operating. Since the first average speed safety cameras began operating at Matakana Road in Warkworth, over 99 percent of vehicles are now travelling within the speed limit, compared with 88 percent when the first survey was carried out in September 2022,” Mr Rodley says.”

As thousands of hunters are making their plans for autumn – the Roar – recreational firearms groups are urging hunters to always be 100% sure of their targets.

Te Tari Pureke – Firearms Safety Authority, which chairs the Recreational Firearms Users Group, has begun a public information campaign reminding hunters everywhere of Rule #4 of the Firearms Safety Code: to identify their target beyond all doubt.

Director Communities and Corporate, Mike McIlraith, says there is an estimated 50,000-60,000 New Zealanders involved in big game animal hunting each year, and the Roar is the key event for many hunters each year.

“The Roar is a fantastic time of year for hunters to get out into the hills after a trophy animal but hunting safely and making sure everyone gets home in one piece, still must be the most important goal of every trip,” says Mike McIlraith.

“The consequences of not fully identifying your target beyond all doubt can be catastrophic. Our message to hunters is a really simple one: If you are not sure, then don’t shoot.”

Mike McIlraith says while hunting fatalities are thankfully rare, research has shown that misidentification of the target is the largest firearms related risk to New Zealand deer hunters, and 80% of the time this involves members of the same hunting group.

The Authority says hunters should not feel pressured to take a shot: “Instead, hunters should take the time to analyse their target, wait and see if it is a hind or stag, how old is the animal, how many points does its antlers have? Identifying your target means never firing at sound, shape, colour or movement alone.”

Mike McIlraith says good hunters will slow down, and run through some simple mental checks:

• Can I see the whole animal, or could this be another hunter?
• Where are my hunting companions – could this be them or someone else?
• How much of the animal can you see, if it is a hind or stag, how old is the animal, how many points does its antlers have?

“Taking a little extra time to identify your target and check the firing zone is the key to safer hunting. No meat or no trophy is better than no mate,” he says.

What is the ‘Roar’?

It is the breeding season of New Zealand’s red deer species. The roar runs from mid-March through April. The roar lasts approximately four weeks, with stags being the most vocal attracting mates in the middle two weeks.

Who are the Recreational Firearms Users Group?

The Recreational Firearms Users Group was formed to help align the important messaging of the various stakeholder groups involved in recreational hunting in New Zealand.

At Upper Hutt College, about 50 students were bound to depart next week on a three-week trip in Europe but these plans have had to be abruptly terminated due to the war which has recently broken out in the Middle East, as all flight paths went through the area. 15 other school groups in New Zealand have also been affected. For Upper Hutt College re-routing flights was not possible.Each student paid about $13,000 – and it now seems many families will face only getting partial refunds. The travel company involved, Defining Moments, says it’s working with the 15 affected school groups.

What rights do families have to refunds?

Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said reimbursement depends heavily on the reason for cancellation.
“If it’s the airline cancelling the flight, in some instances you can recover costs like accommodation,” he said. “But if it’s due to something like an act of war, that’s outside the airline’s control and those extra costs typically won’t be refundable.”

Travel Agents’ Association NZ president Victoria Courtney said such events are difficult for insurers to cover.
“The risk is enormous, and if it was covered, it would significantly increase premiums for everyone,” she said.

The award, presented by government officials, recognized Dr. Ramil Adhikari’s contributions to public health outreach across New Zealand’s Asian and refugee communities.

AUCKLAND — Dr Ramil Adhikari from Upper Hutt has been recognized for his work supporting migrant, refugee, and ethnic communities across Aotearoa New Zealand, receiving a national honor at a symposium convened to address the health needs of the country’s rapidly growing Asian population.

Dr. Ramil Adhikari was presented with the Public Health Award at the Flourishing Asian Communities & Workforce Symposium on March 13, held in Auckland and organized by Asian Family Services, a national organization that provides counselling, crisis support, and community development resources to Asian, migrant, and refugee populations.

The award was presented by Matt Doocey, the government’s Minister for Mental Health, and Kelly Feng, reflecting an alignment between official health policy and grassroots community advocacy that organizers say is increasingly necessary as New Zealand’s demographic makeup shifts.

In remarks following the presentation, Dr. Adhikari turned to a Māori proverb to frame his response — a choice that spoke to the bicultural and multicultural values running through his work.

“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini,” he said. The whakataukī, translated as “My strength is not that of an individual, but that of many,” became the organizing principle of his acceptance.

“This award reflects the collective mahi of many dedicated people working for the wellbeing of Asian, ethnic, migrant, and refugee communities in Aotearoa,” Dr. Adhikari said. He was careful to distribute the credit broadly — to colleagues, community partners, and what he described simply as “our whānau.”

His work, which spans community health outreach, cultural engagement, and efforts to improve access to health services for migrant populations, sits at a crossroads that public health advocates say is often underfunded and overlooked. New Zealand’s Asian-identified population has grown significantly in recent decades, yet research consistently points to gaps in culturally responsive care, language accessibility, and mental health support.

The symposium, which convenes health professionals, community leaders, and policy advocates, is designed in part to close those gaps — bringing together practitioners who operate across institutional and community lines.

For Dr. Adhikari, the recognition was welcome but secondary to the broader message he hoped it would send.

“This recognition belongs to all of us,” he said. “No one achieves this work alone.”

The Flourishing Asian Communities & Workforce Symposium is an annual gathering organized by Asian Family Services, based in Auckland.

Upper Hutt Food Week 2026 got off to a spectacular start on Saturday with the Harvest Festival at Mangaroa Farms drawing a crowd of more than 1,500 people for a day packed with flavour, fun, and community spirit.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Whitemans Valley, the festival delivered something for everyone. Families sprawled across the grounds enjoying live music, children explored nature-based activities, and food lovers were treated to an incredible showcase of local produce and creativity.

From Ōrongomai’s  Hangi to Mangaroa Farm’s wonderful Farm feasts and fresh fruit ices, the event celebrated the very best of Upper Hutt’s local food scene. Stalls were buzzing all day,  as visitors embraced the opportunity to taste, connect, and support local.

One of the standout features of the day was the sea of sunflowers in full bloom, providing a vibrant and joyful setting that perfectly captured the spirit of the event.

More than just a festival, the Harvest Festival highlighted the growing momentum behind community-led food initiatives in Upper Hutt. It brought together local growers, educators, volunteers, and families in a shared celebration of good food, sustainability, and connection.

“This is exactly what Food Week is all about,” said organiser Alice Midgley. “Celebrating what we have, bringing people together, and starting conversations about how we build a stronger, more resilient local food system.”

With a full week of events still to come—Check out the great workshops (Some workshops still have spaces) and tastings to community gatherings—this incredible opening has set the tone for what promises to be an inspiring and impactful Upper Hutt Food Week.

The 2026 annual Open Swiss Doubles tournament took place on Sunday 22nd March at Maidstone Park on a most beautiful autumn day. 22 teams were entered from around the Wellington region, although one team was unable to make it so a Bye was used in each round. 5 rounds of Swiss at 60m with no extra end were played over 12 pistes, 3 before lunch and 2 after. Swiss format is a great way to rank players or teams within just a few games, as winners are automatiocally paired against winners, while non-winners are paired against non-winners after each round.

The ranking used after each round of games was based on number of games won first, then by Buchholz 1, then by Buchholz 2 (also known as fine Buchholz), and finally by differential. Most players are familiar with games won and differential, but tournaments such as Swiss are deemed ‘fairer’ using Buchholz because it takes into account the strengths (based on results at the time) of the opposing teams, scaled by the number of games played, thereby more accurately determining the true ranking. The final ranking results attached show that using traditional ranking by only games won and differential, would have had a very different result for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. At the end of the 5 games, the unluckiest team was John, Kathy and Jan (Bean Bags) from Upper Hutt, with 1 win, who took away a couple of goody bags kindly donated by Summeset. Third place was Colin and Bob, (The Young Ones) from Upper Hutt, with 4 wins. Second place was Paul and Murray (Old Duffers) also from Upper Hutt and with 4 wins. In first place was Theresa and Seymour Harawira (Untouchables) with 5 wins, from Silverstream. The top 3 teams all took away generous cash prizes paid from club funds.

Thanks to all the helpers and food donors on the day, as well as all the players; many of whom travelled some distance despite the price of fuel at the moment, and helped make a great day of play.

Wellington Speedway would like to congratulate our Wellington Young Guns Stockcar Team on their third placing at the Peter Barry Stockcar Teams Championship over the weekend!

We’d also like to congratulate the team on an awesome season of teams racing overall. They’ve experienced the highs, and the lows, and have grown immensely over the season.

The Upper Hutt Piano Trust will present a special programme of piano and music events at Whirinaki Whare Taonga on Sunday 29 March 2026, celebrating World Piano Day.

World Piano Day  (www.pianoday.org ) started 11 years ago as an international celebration of the piano and its music and is held on the 88^th day of the year , the number of keys on a piano.

 Upper Hutt Piano Trust is marking the occasion this year  with a range of performances and activities showcasing the instrument’s versatility, beauty and enduring appeal. The programme will feature local and regional musicians and pianists, with events designed to appeal to music lovers of all genres of music and all ages.

We believe Upper Hutt is the only location in New Zealand to currently  celebrate World Piano Day in a coordinated way .

Held at Upper Hutt’s cultural hub, Whirinaki Whare Taonga, the day will offer the community an opportunity to  listen, play the Kawai grand piano themselves  and experience live music in an inspiring setting.

We are expecting dance groups , electronic keyboards performers  and other music groups to participate .

We perform mostly at retirement villages but have also performed at birthday parties and celebrations of life. The service was started in 2020, to replace a similar service previously run by Red Cross. The purpose of Upper Hutt’s not-for-profit free medical driving service is to help those with limited transport alternatives at grass-roots level (ie helping those without their own vehicle, or with no available family or friends to help them get to medical appointments, usually this is the independent elderly still living in their own homes with limited family assistance available) to reach their medical appointments throughout the wider Region.

Without this service, the alternative for these people would either be, for the patient to have to pay commercial rates and take public transport (however many financially or physically can’t do this), or in some cases patients will be forced to cancel out of medical appointments due to the cost and difficulties of using alternative transport to reach remote clinic locations, such as Wellington Hospital.

So, what does the service provide?

For those without other means of transport to reach their medical appointments, Upper Hutt’s Medical Driving Service provides “door to door” transport to the patient’s medical appointment throughout the Region; often for those needing extra mobility help, this entails the driver taking the patient through to the reception area of the clinic. Drivers will then generally wait to pick up the patient and return them to their home.

We have strived to keep the service “free” for those who need us, so as to not rule it out those who cannot afford transport costs, however we readily accept donations, as these are critical to enable the service to continue to run. 

We URGENTLY need more volunteer drivers:

Most of our drivers tend to be retired people, who want to give something back to the community. Our drivers need to use their own vehicle and be a safe and careful driver, with additional ability and patience to deal with a wide range of people. Our volunteers do not get paid (we are all volunteers), but the society uses the donations we receive to reimburse the drivers for the costs of running their vehicles. 

As a driver, you also need to be a person with patience and an ability to entertain yourself while waiting, as there is a fair amount of “waiting time” involved while patients are at appointments (a good time for reading, crosswords and a coffee). Demands for our services are erratic, governed by patients appointments and your availability, so it is not the case of “same time of day / same day of week” demand. For each job, the coordinator will check you if you are available (and if you are not, hopefully another driver picks up the request), you are not bound to make yourself available, jobs accepted must fit in with your schedule; but maybe your commitment will vary from once every two weeks, through to 1-2 requests per week. Drivers need to adhere to a set of rules set down by the society and need to be comfortable driving locally, to Lower Hutt, or to Wellington, as the typical destinations). Applicant drivers may be required to submit to Police Vetting.

Sunday 9.30am: Traditional NZ Anglican Worship

This is a comfortable, family-friendly feeling service, although it follows the traditional
liturgical format. The service order alternates between the three ANZPB Eucharistic (communion)
liturgies. There is always a sermon with a liturgical assistant leading the worship; when a priest is not available. The communion is led by one of our leaders licenced for reserved sacrament.

The service order follows ANZPB with the Sunday sermon being repeated here. Our services are supported by a good tech suite, including two large monitors installed at the front of the church, and a quality sound system.

What we Believe:

We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and the Sovereign Lord over all of life. We are fully committed to the Bible in its entirety as the Word of God. We believe that theology is important, it is vital for the health of the church, and without sound doctrine the church decays. Throughout history, the church has confessed what it believes by faithfully summarising the truths of the Bible in written forms known as creeds and confessions. These confessions do not hold the same authority as the Bible, but they help to summarise the Bible’s teaching. Ultimately, the Bible remains our only rule for faith and life. 

Who we Are:

Our Church is a family church, with a mixture of young families, retirees, couples, single people and youth. We have approximately 200 members, from different backgrounds, meeting together because we share a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

Service Times:

Our worship services are on Sunday at 10 AM and 4 PM, and we would love to see you there. Our friendly greeters will meet you at the door and answer any questions you have.

Who we are: A congregation of faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ in the heart of Trentham. We gather in a historic Anglican church, founded in 1863 and continuously used for worship since then, providing a place of beauty, sacredness, and stillness. But the church is primarily about people, relationships, and recovery day by day, wherever we live. Our focus is on faith, family, and care for others.

What we do: We seek to nurture our faith, our relationship with God, in various ways. First and foremost, we come to worship and pray together. The Parish seeks to provide a variety of styles of worship to suit the varying needs of parishioners. We also gather in small groups for Bible study and fellowship, have regular community events, and have monthly communion services in Fergusson Rest Home and the Summerset Community Centre.

Weekly services:

Sunday 10.00am: Communion in the church with children’s ministry

Our Sunday inter-generational service unites families, young and old, in the church, while our children’s program (Godly Play) offers meaningful spiritual education for our tamariki. We gather for morning tea in and around the entry foyer afterwards.

Wednesday 10.00am: Liturgy of the Word with Holy Communion in the church

In addition to the Sunday service, there are other opportunities for worship during the week, such as the Wednesday 10am Holy Communion. This is in the church and uses one of the services in A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare. We gather for morning tea in the foyer afterwards.

Weekdays 7.00am: Morning Prayer

Morning Prayeris held in the church chapel every weekday morning at 7am. We use A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare, but there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to join the time of intercession and thanksgiving at the end of this service. All ages are welcome.

Worship Services:

Upper Hutt Uniting provides Presbyterian – Methodist church services each Sunday at 10am at the Wesley Centre (Te Whanau Lounge) located at 1 Benzie Avenue. We are fortunate to have a revolving preaching team, of both Ordained and Lay Preachers, who offer an interesting and different variety of relaxed preaching styles. After service refreshments and social time. Visitors are welcome to join us.

Wesley Centre:

A multi-use community centre located close to the Upper Hutt city centre, hosting 5 separate churches (Presbyterian -Methodist, Tongan language Methodist, Samoan Assembly of God, Messianic Saturday study group and a church from Myanmar – contact us for details on other groups services), together with the Wesley Thrift Shop and Upper Hutt Foodbank, plus multiple regular and casual community organisations meetings and as a venue for group and family events. 

Wesley Centre provides a modern church space, a gymnasium style hall for functions, two kitchens and two spacious meeting rooms.
