– Act Early to Stop Wasps Before Nests Take Hold
As spring arrives, so do queen wasps emerging from winter hibernation and searching for places to start new nests. Taking action early can prevent a small problem from turning into a large and costly infestation later in the season.
Pest control experts advise that eliminating a queen wasp before she establishes a nest is one of the most effective ways to reduce wasp numbers. If the queen is killed before her first workers emerge, the colony cannot develop. Once a nest is established and hundreds or even thousands of worker wasps are present, locating and eradicating it becomes significantly more difficult and expensive.
If a queen wasp enters your home, quickly close doors and windows to prevent escape routes and carefully spray the insect. Acting promptly can stop a new colony before it begins.
Understanding the Queen Wasp’s Life Cycle
Spring: Emerging and Nest Building
After spending winter in hibernation, fertilised queen wasps emerge and begin feeding. They search for sheltered locations such as roof eaves, wall cavities, sheds, or banks where they can construct a small paper nest made from chewed wood fibres and saliva.
The queen lays her first eggs and cares for the developing larvae herself. After around four to six weeks, the first generation of sterile female workers emerges and takes over nest duties.
Summer: Rapid Colony Growth
Once workers are present, the colony expands rapidly. Workers forage for food, collect building materials, and care for larvae, while the queen focuses almost entirely on laying eggs. During this stage, nests can grow into large colonies containing hundreds or even thousands of wasps.
Autumn: Reproduction
As the season progresses, the colony shifts its focus from producing workers to producing new queens and male drones. These reproductive wasps leave the nest to mate, ensuring the continuation of the species.
Winter: Dormancy
After mating, young queens seek sheltered locations to hibernate through winter. The old queen, workers, and drones die off, and the nest is abandoned. In mild climates such as parts of New Zealand, some nests may occasionally survive winter, but most do not.
A Simple Prevention Tool
One effective way to target queen wasps before colonies become established is through trapping.
EasyTRAP Hanging Wasp Traps are available from Mitre 10 for $9.98 (price accurate at October 2026). For best results, bait the traps with fruit juice mixed with added sugar and place them outdoors from late August through early September. This timing coincides with the period when queen wasps are actively searching for nesting sites.
By focusing on queens early in the season, homeowners can significantly reduce the likelihood of dealing with large wasp nests later in the year, helping to make outdoor spaces safer and more enjoyable throughout summer.
– Plenty foods invites Upper Hutt community to become Founding Owners
Upper Hutt grocery business, Plenty foods at Brewtown, is inviting local people to become Founding Owners through a new equity crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMe.
The campaign is intended to support the company’s next stage of growth. Plenty foods says the investment will help strengthen the business, improve its systems and technology, and enhance the customer experience as it works towards its five-year business plan.
Plenty foods has established itself as a fresh grocery alternative for Upper Hutt shoppers since opening nearly a year ago. The locally owned supermarket says its focus has been on offering choice and value while building a strong connection with the community.
Support from customers across Upper Hutt has helped the business build a foundation during its first year. Plenty foods will mark its first birthday on 6 November and is asking the community to help shape its next chapter.
The company describes Founding Ownership as an opportunity for customers and other supporters to invest in a business they know and want to see succeed. As with any investment, prospective investors should review the information provided through the campaign before making a decision.
More information about the offer, including the campaign details, is available on the Plenty foods PledgeMe campaign page.

– Reconnect with your community through shared transport
By Saveun Man, Upper Hutt local and founder of Carpoolin *AD*
You know the drill, you work in town, get up before 7, be in town by 9, one person per car and the rest of it.
Gas isn’t getting cheaper and I’m spending a decent percentage of my income on keeping this car around that I don’t really care about.
Why isn’t carpooling a thing in 2026?
I’m Saveun from Elderslea, Upper Hutt and the founder of Carpoolin. An App designed to help people find others travelling to the same place. You know, carpooling.
Carpooling is this really great way people can split fuel and parking costs, reduce the number of cars making the same journey, and give us an opportunity to connect with others in our community.
It’s definitely not for everyone or every trip, but the main thing we want to do is get those Trips we commonly make out there so people around you can discover it.
One of the challenges with carpooling has always been finding the right people. You might know someone who works near you, but not their schedule. You might be heading to the same event as someone else in your neighbourhood without ever knowing it.
We’re taking the learnings of past attempts and incorporating them into Carpoolin.
Our features Groups and Events allow people to connect through communities they already belong to, whether that’s a workplace, a sports club, a local group or an event they’re attending.
Nobody wants to share an awkward trip with a complete stranger.
The aim is to present relevant information to you so you can make informed decisions about Trips that are happening around you.
Carpoolin is free to join and use, you pick a role (being a Driver or Passenger) and go from there.
It’s available nationwide, but I’d love to see more people in Upper Hutt exploring whether it could work for them.
If you’re a community leader, a business owner or someone who makes similar Trips from week to week I think it could help.
The hope is that Carpoolin can become more than just a way to share a car. It can be another way for communities to help one another, save a little money and give space for you to connect with your neighbour.
If you’d like to learn more check out; https://carpoolin.co cheers.
This has been a paid article promoting the Carpoolin App.

– Elections 2026: We ask the Questions – the Parties offer their Responses
Dear Reader,
On 16th September we held a Meeting of our members and others from our Community as the first of two events where we attempt to explain to our membership, supporters and wider-community the fundamental concerns we believe all voters should ask of individual and ‘party nominated’ candidates before identifying ‘electorate’ and ‘party list’ choice and then, exercising their vote on election day, Saturday, 7th November 2026.
Our second meeting prior to Election Day will be held on Wednesday 21st October 2026, at the Baptist Church Centre, Cnr. Fergusson Drive and Milton Streets, Upper Hutt, commencing at 1:30pm.
This later gathering of members, supporters and wider-community will be devoted to providing an invitation to address us via a ‘’speaking-slot’ allocated by lot to at least each of the candidates representing the parties polling ‘strongest’ in ‘opinion polls’.
While mandated to participate in public discussion on matters ‘political’ Grey Power is strictly ‘apolitical.’ We seek primarily to provide considered prioritisation of public expenditure sufficient to adequately fund ‘public services’ and ‘integrated infrastructure; in support of a dignified retirement for older people, families as they progress toward retirement and others who have involuntarily lost their participation in the ‘paid workforce.’ Our ideal outcome would see unbreakable ‘cross-party’ accord on the availability of publicly funded services, the cost of living and, of course, the achievement of a universally protected and sustainable environment.
The business we are conducting refers to seven (7) ‘policy’ categories where Grey Power New Zealand Federation (GPNZF) sought party responses to a range of questions critical to the well-being of older people, families and others as they progress toward retirement.
Grey Power asked the seven major political parties to outline their policies for older New Zealanders ahead of the 2026 General Election. National, Labour, the Green Party, New Zealand First and Opportunity Party responded. ACT was invited to participate but said it not have the capacity to complete the questionnaire. Te Pāti Māori did not respond.
We emphasise our review was current at 24 August 2026. We accept no responsibility to determine and/or update party ‘policy amendments’ announced subsequent to that date. The policies encompassed by our review are ‘institutional’ in nature and are fundamental to all parties seeking representation in New Zealand’s governance.
The responses reveal broad agreement on protecting New Zealand Superannuation, but significant differences in healthcare, housing and cost-of-living policies.
The questions and responses may be examined by clicking’ on the attachment(s) designated below.

– Menzshed Update – October 2026
Progress has been made on our new build with the concrete slab being finally laid. After a short curing period, the erection of the new building will commence. We have already received the large assembly kit and hopefully we will be able to put it together without any bits leftover!
Our Chairman, Darryl, recently presented a certificate conferring life membership of the Upper Hutt Menzshed, to one of our founder members, Phil Kidd. Phil initiated our start up over 10 years ago and his dedication and commitment to the Menzshed has been epic over the years, an honour well deserved! Well done Phil!
On a sad note, we said goodbye to Richard H who passed away quite suddenly. Richard was an integral part of the recycling team and he will be sadly missed by all his colleagues.
Several projects have been completed in the last few weeks. It seems that many customers have decided to look at their furniture in the last few weeks and bring it in to us to fix. A side table with a broken leg, upholstered chair with creaking joints needing a touch up and a stool wanting a paint job!
A doll’s pram with wheels that had come adrift was also repaired, thanks Keiron, and Peter made an overnight box for a sleepy tortoise for a local Kindy.
Other items fixed or made included a heater with loose legs, two trophy holders were and a jewellery box that had seen better days and needed some serious TLC.
The large batch of DOC200 traps used to control stoats, weasels and rats is finally complete. Thanks to Doug, Murray and Curtis for driving the project along with several other members who lent a hand along the way. I’m not sure the stoats will appreciate our efforts though!
We have been in contact with many Kindy’s in Upper Hutt but if you haven’t heard from us then shout out, we are always ready to listen. This invitation is also open to the community at large so if you have a project in mind and you think we can help, then feel free to contact us for a chat and we will do our best to assist you.
contactus@upperhuttmenzshed.kiwi
Don’t forget to visit our website for details on where we are and what we do.
You can visit it here:-

We are always on the lookout for new members and later this year we will have a metalworking facility. Maybe you have seen our display in the Mall which shows some of the things we do and who we do them for. If you have and would like more info, contact us for a free tour and meet the team.
contactus@upperhuttmenzshed.kiwi
If you want to join us, even for just a cup of tea and a yarn, pop in to see us, you will be more than welcome. Just come along @ 10am Tue to Fri. We are open 9 – 12 Tues to Fri. You will find us at McLeod Park just past the BMX track

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
– When Rules Don’t Apply – Local Body Election Get Out of Jail Free Card! – Kate Fabian
By Fellow Wāhine and Sister, Kate Fabian
“Can you help a sister out”, Anna McMartin has put out the call for support.
As a fellow sister, I warmly support Anna McMartin and her recent reflection on the state of local government elections on her page “The End is Naenae“, and have signed her petition. (Petition Link)
Anna rightly highlights a subtle yet critical vulnerability in local politics: the gradual, “quiet drip, drip, drip” erosion of standard electoral processes and community trust. Her call to bring local council elections under the independent oversight of the Electoral Commission—moving away from outsourced private contractor models—is a vision that affects all of us.
https://uhconnection.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kate-fabian-26th-of-october-2026-1.png
My own experience supporting campaign activities in Upper Hutt closely aligns with the systemic challenges Anna describes. Understandably, this issue hits close to home. In my case, I feel deep empathy for Anna and the position she was put in—particularly because many of the most serious candidate rule concerns I formally raised involved the very candidate Anna dedicated her time and heart to support, who was pushing transparency and accountability. While it is heartbreaking to see well-meaning supporters impacted by a campaign that repeatedly pushed boundaries, my concerns sent to electionz.com (https://linkly.link/2xuLp) were never about targeted opposition; they were about upholding fairness across the entire election.
https://uhconnection.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/kate-fabian-26th-of-october-2026-2.png
Having attended the briefing run by Electoral Officer Warwick Lampp where the rules were clearly outlined, it was concerning to watch compliance disintegrate on the ground. I saw “treating” through giveaways, e.g. campaign T-shirts, alongside materials missing mandatory authorisation statements. When these breaches were formally compiled, the response from electionz.com revealed the core problem: private managers exercise broad discretion behind closed doors, often resolving infractions with private warnings and apologies which did not seem to fit the outcomes outlined in the handbook and briefing, while local Council CEOs remain legally powerless to intervene. If this is able to be treated in the same vein and this is all the accountability and transparency that is required, then the concerns Anna has raised over other candidates could be treated in the same way and it all go away with a private apology. Leaving the voting public and other candidates genuinely unaware of the infractions.
Leaving supporters like Anna McMartin, myself and others to challenge. As with Anna McMartin and her petition to bring to light her concerns and changes, within the current system, it would appear, a mere private apology to Warwick Lampp is all that is required.
When rules are broken without public transparency and accountability, it can undermine the genuine efforts of honest volunteers along with candidates, and leaves supporters like Anna to start a petition highlight how deeply flawed this private model is. (emails – https://linkly.link/2xuQ4)
I felt very strongly about this and at the time wrote to many candidates around the country to highlight similar issues to which Anna is raising in her petition.
OIA Response https://linkly.link/2xvJA
Anna McMartin has submitted OIA requests to UHCC and I believe this is one which has relevance to the matter which Anna is referring to in a post regarding ex-Mayor Wayne Guppy and Graham Bloxham on the 21st July 2026.
https://linkly.link/2xvOX
Anna and myself may not see eye to eye on some things, but in this instance, I commend Anna McMartin for opening this necessary conversation. By transitioning local body elections to the Electoral Commission, we can ensure consistent national standards, public transparency for breaches, and a level playing field where no candidate can exploit systemic loopholes.
Once again, from one sister to another, thank you to Anna McMartin for bringing this back into the light and raising the profile of this issue around the motu.
To support this cause head to the petition and sign (Petition Link)
A “thank you” to Kate Fabian for sending this letter to The Upper Hutt Connection.

– Dr. Zabeen Lateef – National Party Candidate for Remutaka
Over the past few months I’ve been getting to know our Remutaka electorate: visiting businesses, schools, community organisations and events, and talking with people about what matters to them.
My background is in science, education, strategy and governance. I’ve spent much of my career taking complex problems, understanding the evidence, bringing the right people together and finding practical ways forward.
That’s the approach I’d bring to the practical issues people are raising with me: access to healthcare, reliable transport and infrastructure, good jobs, safer communities, affordable housing and better opportunities for young people.
I’ve also learned that Upper Hutt, Stokes Valley, and Lower Hutt each have their own strengths and priorities. Good representation means understanding those differences and ensuring they are reflected in the decisions that affect them.
Thank you to everyone who has welcomed me, shared their experiences and trusted me with their stories. I look forward to many more conversations in the weeks ahead, and to the opportunity to earn your trust and your vote.
A “thank you” to Dr. Zabeen Lateef for sending this to The Upper Hutt Connection.

– Luke Ross for Remutaka – Opportunity Party
I’m Luke Ross, a Silverstream resident and your local candidate for the Opportunity Party.
People are tired, worried and facing a political system that hasn’t seen a major change in decades. The status quo isn’t working. The Opportunity Party is a circuit-breaker, ready to bring fresh ideas and a true bipartisan approach, focusing on our three core areas:
Fix politics – end wasteful policy flip-flops, strengthen democracy through Citizens’ Assemblies, and limit the influence of corporate lobbyists.
Build the next economy – bring prices down by regulating the supermarkets, building renewable energy and creating a tax system that ensures that every Kiwi can live well and contribute.
Restore nature – stop bottom-trawling, protect our oceans and forests, and prioritise meaningful action on climate change.
I’m spending my time out in the community listening to your concerns and aspirations for the future. Reach out to me at any time at luke.ross@opportunity.org.nz and remember to party vote for Opportunity.

– Meet Nigel Elder – ACT Candidate for Remutaka
I’m standing for ACT because I believe in the future New Zealand.
After more than 30 years serving in the Defence Force, running a business exporting New Zealand products, and most recently serving as a Greater Wellington Regional Councillor, I’ve seen first-hand what happens when organisations are disciplined, accountable and focused on results — and what happens when bureaucracy gets in the way.
ACT’s priorities align strongly with my own:
Smaller, smarter government — reducing waste and bureaucracy so taxpayers get better value and meaningful tax relief.
Less red and green tape — removing unnecessary regulation and administrative burdens that make it harder to build, invest, employ people and grow our economy.
Equal rights and responsibilities — one set of rights and responsibilities for every New Zealander, regardless of race or ancestry.
I understand the issues that matter to people across Remutaka: transport, water, flood protection, the environment and affordability. My focus will be on practical solutions that improve our communities and create the conditions for people and businesses to prosper.
On November 7th, I’m asking for your party vote for ACT.
A “thank you” to Nigel Elder for sending this article to The Upper Hutt Connection.

– Silverstream Reformed Church
Location: 8 Blue Mountains Road, Silverstream
What we Believe:
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and the Sovereign Lord over all of life. We are fully committed to the Bible in its entirety as the Word of God. We believe that theology is important, it is vital for the health of the church, and without sound doctrine the church decays. Throughout history, the church has confessed what it believes by faithfully summarising the truths of the Bible in written forms known as creeds and confessions. These confessions do not hold the same authority as the Bible, but they help to summarise the Bible’s teaching. Ultimately, the Bible remains our only rule for faith and life.
Who we Are:
Our Church is a family church, with a mixture of young families, retirees, couples, single people and youth. We have approximately 200 members, from different backgrounds, meeting together because we share a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
Service Times:
Our worship services are on Sunday at 10 AM and 4 PM, and we would love to see you there. Our friendly greeters will meet you at the door and answer any questions you have.

Weekly services:
Sunday 9.30am: Traditional NZ Anglican Worship
This is a comfortable, family-friendly feeling service, although it follows the traditional
liturgical format. The service order alternates between the three ANZPB Eucharistic (communion)
liturgies. There is always a sermon with a liturgical assistant leading the worship; when a priest is not available. The communion is led by one of our leaders licenced for reserved sacrament.
Thursday 10.00am: Traditional Communion Service
The service order follows ANZPB with the Sunday sermon being repeated here. Our services are supported by a good tech suite, including two large monitors installed at the front of the church, and a quality sound system.
Prayer books remain available in the pews for anyone who prefers to use them

Who we are: A congregation of faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ in the heart of Trentham. We gather in a historic Anglican church, founded in 1863 and continuously used for worship since then, providing a place of beauty, sacredness, and stillness. But the church is primarily about people, relationships, and recovery day by day, wherever we live. Our focus is on faith, family, and care for others.
What we do: We seek to nurture our faith, our relationship with God, in various ways. First and foremost, we come to worship and pray together. The Parish seeks to provide a variety of styles of worship to suit the varying needs of parishioners. We also gather in small groups for Bible study and fellowship, have regular community events, and have monthly communion services in Fergusson Rest Home and the Summerset Community Centre.
