The interactive map charts more than 4.3 million vineyards, 221 of them in Martinborough.

World Winery Map, the newly launched wine map of the world, maps 52 wineries and 221 vineyards from Martinborough. Martinborough vineyards sit at an average elevation of 51 metres and are 3.3 °C cooler during the vine growing season than those in Bordeaux, according to World Winery Map data.

The project is the most comprehensive interactive database of global wine terroir, mapping 4,303,693 vineyards and 104,330 wineries across 90 countries. For every single vineyard on the map, users can access highly specific geospatial data, including elevation, solar radiation, and slope, alongside critical viticultural metrics like soil composition, the Huglin index, and average temperatures during the vine growing season.

“For each parcel, we extracted the exact coordinates and calculated the elevation, slope, and aspect using the Copernicus GLO-30 terrain model, then layered climate data on top of that,” said Matija Gavrilović, founder of World Winery Map. “For larger parcels, we measure up to 16 control points, which is why elevation is presented as a precise range rather than a single number. We also calculated the slope, rainfall, wind, soil type, and geology wherever data was available.”

The vineyard parcels are aggregated from 38 independent sources. Twenty-two of these are official government registers. Users can select any region to read essential facts, review borders, check average rainfall and elevation, and analyze viticultural data like the Winkler index. World Winery Map is already in touch with official bodies in several countries, with the aim of keeping the map as accurate as possible.

The map outlines 98,719 specific wine region boundaries, scaling from massive macro-regions down to individual named plots. This includes 2,815 official wine regions, subregions, and appellations, alongside 95,904 named vineyard sites. The platform is explicitly tailored for both industry professionals and wine travelers. An integrated geolocation system allows users to instantly locate nearby wineries and receive navigation instructions to the estate, regardless of where they are in the world.

Winemakers from Martinborough are invited to claim their winery profiles on the platform for free. By taking ownership of their pages, producers can update tasting room hours, verify visitor policies, claim their specific vineyard parcels, and update data on planted grape varieties—actively participating in maintaining the world’s most accurate and detailed wine map.

A Wellington woman is giving two hours to support New Zealanders affected by breast cancer – and she’s encouraging others across the region to get involved too.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s Pink Ribbon Street Appeal returns on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October. More volunteers are needed across the region to collect donations during a two-hour shift at a local supermarket, shopping centre or community location.

The Pink Ribbon Street Appeal is the Foundation’s longest-running fundraiser, raising vital funds in support of the 390 women diagnosed with breast cancer in the greater Wellington region every year – and more than 3,700 people around the country.

But the appeal couldn’t happen without the thousands of volunteers who generously give their time each year.

For Lola Costello, volunteering is personal after she was diagnosed with breast cancer last October.

Lola says, “I have collected for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal before but it had been a while, then I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year completely out of the blue.

“I found Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s website invaluable to help me understand my cancer and my treatment plan, as well as help me explain it to people in my life.

“I also found the cancer myself, and early, in no small part because of the Foundation’s awareness campaigns. By April, I was cancer-free again.”

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s chief executive Vanessa Sorenson says the impact of the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal reaches far beyond the collection sites: “A pink bucket may look like a small thing, but the generosity behind it helps someone get trusted advice when breast cancer turns their life upside down. It helps communities learn about early detection and enables researchers to pursue better ways to diagnose and treat the disease.

“As an independent charity, we receive no government funding for our vital work. We need people across Wellington to help fill the collection sites – and if you can spare two hours, we would love to have you with us.”

Signing up to collect for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal is easy – simply choose a location and time that suits, then show up for your shift. Everything volunteers need is provided at the collection site, and first-time volunteers will receive information and support before their shift.

The money raised through the appeal helps to empower communities with education, fund groundbreaking research and innovation, provide compassionate patient support, and advocate for change so more New Zealanders with breast cancer can live and live well.

Upper Hutt ratepayers are funding barrister Linda Clark to represent mayor Peri Zee in Harmful Digital Communications Act proceedings brought by Paul and Kate Fabian.

Clark is advising Zee after the Fabians, long‑time council critics, accused her of harmful online conduct. Early interactions between the parties were cordial, but by June Zee accused them of spreading disinformation about her role on the Tiaki Wai Metro Waters Partners committee. The Fabians denied this and filed an HDCA application, which a district court judge accepted in July.

Zee also complained to police about the couple’s communications. A community constable visited their home, but police found the threshold for harassment was not met and closed the file.

A council spokesperson confirmed ratepayers are covering Zee’s legal costs, saying the matter relates to her official capacity. The council has not disclosed Clark’s fees but said it would seek to recover costs if the application is dismissed. A procurement process was not required.

Clark has previously handled several local government disputes, including reviewing Upper Hutt City Council’s response to noise complaints about the Farrah’s bread factory, investigating Wellington City councillors over a leaked land‑purchase proposal, and involvement in disputes at Gore District Council. She has also represented clients in other high‑profile cases.

You might remember the colourful artwork created by students from Tōtara Park School on the temporary fencing around the bridge.

A big thank you again to the students for bringing some colour and creativity to the work site, we’ve loved seeing their artwork now brightening up the bridge!

With scaffolding now up, work is underway to replace the drinking water and wastewater pipes beneath the bridge, as well as upgrade the pipe connections at both ends of the bridge to improve earthquake resilience.

The new pipes and brackets along the bridge are designed to IL4, equivalent to a 2,500-year return period earthquake event.

The existing pipes are nearing the end of their life, and these upgrades will help provide more resilient and reliable water and wastewater services for the Tōtara Park community for years to come.

We’ll keep the artwork on display while the work progresses.

Tiaki Wai is inviting feedback from people across Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua to help it build the next edition of the plan to fix and improve the region’s water services. 

People are invited to fill out a short survey at haveyoursay.tiakiwai.co.nz before 4 October to rank priorities across the breadth of work Tiaki Wai is responsible for. 

“We want to hear from people about what they think we should prioritise, so we can build our work programme in a way that meets the expectations of the people we serve,” said David Ward, Tiaki Wai Chief Strategy and Planning Officer. 

“In March 2027, we will be consulting on our next Water Services Strategy, the document that sets out our work plan and proposed charges for the next 30 years, with a focus on the next decade. 

“This will cost many billions of dollars, so we’ll need to space out the work to spread the cost over many years. With your help, we’ll develop a plan for what we should focus on first.  

“To build our work programme, we’re looking at the current state of our water infrastructure, the things Parliament and our regulators have told us we have to do, and now we want to add the views of our customers and the people we serve into that mix.

Dear Reader,

On the 16th September we held a Meeting of our members and others from our as the first of two events where we  attempt to explain to our membership, supporters and wider-community the fundamental concerns we believe all voters should ask of individual and ‘party nominated’ candidates before identifying ‘electorate’ and ‘party list’ choice and then, exercising their vote on election day, Saturday, 7^th November 2026. 

Our second meeting prior to Election Day will be held on Wednesday 21^st October 2026, at the Baptist Church Centre, Cnr. Fergusson Drive and Milton Streets, Upper Hutt, commencing at 1:30pm.

This later gathering of members, supporters and wider-community will be devoted to providing an invitation to address us via a ‘’speaking-slot’ allocated by lot to at least each of the candidates representing the parties polling ‘strongest’ in ‘opinion polls’.  

While mandated to participate in public discussion on matters ‘political’ Grey Power is strictly ‘apolitical.’ We seek primarily to provide considered prioritisation of public expenditure sufficient to adequately fund ‘public services’ and ‘integrated infrastructure; in support of a dignified retirement for older people, families as they progress toward retirement and others who have involuntarily lost their participation in the ‘paid workforce.’  Our ideal outcome would see unbreakable ‘cross-party’ accord on the availability of publicly funded services, the cost of living and, of course, the achievement of a universally protected and sustainable environment.

The business we are conducting refers to seven (7) ‘policy’ categories where Grey Power New Zealand Federation (GPNZF) sought party responses to a range of questions critical to the well-being of older people, families as they progress toward retirement and others.

Grey Power asked the seven major political parties to outline their policies for older New Zealanders ahead of the 2026 General Election. National, Labour, the Green Party, New Zealand First and Opportunity Party responded. ACT was invited to participate but said it not have the capacity to complete the questionnaire. Te Pāti Māori did not respond.

We emphasise our review was current at 24 August 2026. We accept no responsibility to determine and/or update party ‘policy amendments’ announced subsequent to that date. The policies encompassed by our review are ‘institutional’ in nature and are fundamental to all parties seeking representation in New Zealand’s governance.

The responses reveal broad agreement on protecting New Zealand Superannuation, but significant differences in healthcare, housing and cost-of-living policies.

Upper Hutt has a World Record Race Walking champion after Jacqueline Wilson returned this week from a successful trip at the World Masters Athletics Championships in South Korea. Normally seen pounding the streets and river trail, Jacqueline has put in the miles and dedication to bring back 3 Gold medals from the Championships.

Only starting the sport in her 60’s, she has already represented New Zealand on the World Stage in Brazil, Spain, Korea, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Oceania (Cook Is and Fiji), UK and Australia with an impressive haul of medals to prove it.

The World Masters Athletic Championships are held every two years and cover all track and field events, including non-stadia events, such as Cross country and Half Marathon for runners and 10/20km road walks for Race Walkers. They are open to any athlete over 35 who belongs to Masters Athletics.  The Championships were held late August/ early September in Daegu, South Korea. There were 7476 competitors from over 90 countries, the eldest competitor from Thailand at 106! It was also the largest athletics event held in Asia so far. The NZ Team consisted of 28 athletes and a total of 23 medals were won (9 Gold, 8 Silver and 6 Bronze).

Daegu is the 4^th largest city in Korea with a population of 2.4m and three stadiums were used, spread throughout the city. Shuttle buses provided transit between venues from various parts of the city and free transport passes were provided for the duration of the competition. The transport system, with metro, monorail, and buses was very efficient and modern. Taking the bus and metro was a challenge at first, but most transport options announced or displayed the next stop in both languages, so it became relatively easy as long as you knew where you were going!

Jacqueline, Women’s 80+, won each of her designated events, the 5000m track Walk (36:22.30), the 10Km Road Walk (1:12.50) and 20km Road Walk (2:32.54). The World Record was broken in the 20km road walk, bettering the previous record by almost 5 mins. As one would expect, taking part in summer, the temperatures and humidity in Korea were high, even considering the early start of 7am for the Road Walks. Fortunately some welcome rain midway through the 20km Road Walk, helped cool things down a little.

These are not the only World Records she holds, the W75+, 3000m and 5000m Road Walks she has held since February 2021. As you would expect she holds Wellington and NZ National records for her events.

Getting to Korea, involved flights via Singapore and Busan going out and Hong Kong and Melbourne coming home. Busan (on the South Coast of Korea), is a port city and the coast is quite picturesque, totally different to the busy bustling city of Seoul (the capital), which we visited on our last trip to Korea in 2017. Getting to Daegu was easy using the Korail KTX (similar to the Bullet Trains in Japan).                  

Being part of Masters Athletics shows we can continue exercising and competing successfully whatever our age, having the determination and ability to represent New Zealand on the World Stage. You meet new people from many countries, make new friends and you also get a chance to travel the World doing it.

Having just returned from a huge conference on AI in New Zealand  I thought readers might be interested in hearing what our local AI experts might think about the powers of AI to lead to human extinction. The answer is a resounding no. No, they are not thinking about human extinction and no, they are not thinking about slowing the development and implementation of AI in our every day lives. The conference attendees from all sectors of government, commerce and developers were overwhelmingly positive about its benefits, especially as a chance to build globally significant companies, solve unique challenges and shape New Zealand’s development with “one of the most consequential technological challenges in history”. Wow!

As independent observers, what questions should we be asking, bearing in mind this optimistic approach from government, commerce and policy makers?

As a doctoral student, I’m keen to hear what questions about AI you would like answered.

I’m standing for ACT because I believe in the future New Zealand.

After more than 30 years serving in the Defence Force, running a business exporting New Zealand products, and most recently serving as a Greater Wellington Regional Councillor, I’ve seen first-hand what happens when organisations are disciplined, accountable and focused on results — and what happens when bureaucracy gets in the way.

ACT’s priorities align strongly with my own:

Smaller, smarter government — reducing waste and bureaucracy so taxpayers get better value and meaningful tax relief.

Less red and green tape — removing unnecessary regulation and administrative burdens that make it harder to build, invest, employ people and grow our economy.

Equal rights and responsibilities — one set of rights and responsibilities for every New Zealander, regardless of race or ancestry.

I understand the issues that matter to people across Remutaka: transport, water, flood protection, the environment and affordability. My focus will be on practical solutions that improve our communities and create the conditions for people and businesses to prosper.

Oho Mai – The Awakening: 8 Aug – 18 Oct 2026

Oho Mai brings together three contemporary Māori artists from our region, Garry Nicholas, Joanne Kahui, and Stephen Thorpe whose practices reflect the richness and evolving nature of te ao Māori. Working across a range of mediums and approaches, each artist offers a distinct perspective grounded in kaupapa Māori, whakapapa, identity, and connection to place.

Through painting, sculpture, raranga, and tā moko, Oho Mai explores both contemporary expression and cultural continuity, celebrating the strength and vitality of Māori creativity today. The exhibition highlights how artists continue to draw from mātauranga Māori while responding to the world around them in innovative, thoughtful, and deeply personal ways.

In August 2026, Ōrongomai Marae marks 50 years in Upper Hutt with an exhibition that brings together the people, moments, and movements that made it possible.

From the bold decision to establish a marae in the heart of a growing city, this exhibition traces how Ōrongomai came into being. It celebrates the visionaries, builders, and cultural leaders who shaped its foundation, including the powerful legacy of Mā-wai-hakona, whose performances carried Ōrongomai onto national and international stages.

At its heart, this is a story of belonging: how a community created a place for itself, and how that place continues to serve, welcome, and grow. Ōrongomai Tū Tonu invites you to experience a living history and the people who continue to shape it.

Around the World in 90 Minutes; buckle up and travel around the globe with the Aroha String Quartet, with stopovers to sample the music of seven different countries on five continents – Europe, Asia, South America, North America and Zealandia.

The journey begins in Austria with a sunny, sparkling piece by the father of the string quartet, Josef Haydn. The programme then travels overland to Russia for Shostakovich’s Elegy & Polka and backtrack to Spain for Turina’s evocative Bullfighter’s Prayer, followed by New Zealand with the lovely Toccatina by Ross Carey. After interval the quartet takes us to China for an arrangement of the famous folk song Er Quan Ying Yue composed by blind erhu player A Bing. This music depicts the moon reflecting on the Er Quan spring. In Eastern Europe selections from Miniatures by Georgian composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze features with the world tour finishing in Argentina with Tango Ballet by tango-master Astor Piazzolla. This will be an exciting musical journey!

Artificial Intelligence is now a permanent fixture that you cannot avoid. Even if you don’t actively use AI yourself, it is being used by all those who mediate your important, high stakes services such as medical care, banking and finance, government services. In plain language I would like to talk to you about the pros and cons of AI and the ways you can take control in this changing environment.

My presentations are designed for an older audience, and I am available during the day and early evenings.

I am undertaking a doctorate on the impact of AI on older people and the organisations that serve them.

We perform mostly at retirement villages but have also performed at birthday parties and celebrations of life. We focus on songs from the 50’s to the 80’s but most importantly we are there for our audiences and what they enjoy.

How we can help:

Worship – Sunday 10:30am

You can expect to experience family friendly worship in amongst a congregation that reflects our community.

Services usually go for just over an hour and are filled with spiritually uplifting music, scripture readings, prayers, children’s church and encouraging conversational preaching.

Welfare – Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-12.30pm

Foodbank is a friendly, non-judgemental place, to seek out some assistance to make sure the family doesn’t go without during tough times.

We can also assist with Counselling, Advocacy Services, Furniture and clothing and laundry for those sleeping rough. Please ring our office on (04) 528 6745 to make an appointment.

Worship services:

Our worship services take place on Sundays at 10.00am.

The First Sunday of each month is a Communion Service and the second Sunday is a Family Service.

Our services are fairly traditional, and we have a very warm and welcoming congregation.

We offer children’s church for primary school age that happens during the main church service.

What we Believe:

We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour and the Sovereign Lord over all of life. We are fully committed to the Bible in its entirety as the Word of God. We believe that theology is important, it is vital for the health of the church, and without sound doctrine the church decays. Throughout history, the church has confessed what it believes by faithfully summarising the truths of the Bible in written forms known as creeds and confessions. These confessions do not hold the same authority as the Bible, but they help to summarise the Bible’s teaching. Ultimately, the Bible remains our only rule for faith and life. 

Who we Are:

Our Church is a family church, with a mixture of young families, retirees, couples, single people and youth. We have approximately 200 members, from different backgrounds, meeting together because we share a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

Service Times:

Our worship services are on Sunday at 10 AM and 4 PM, and we would love to see you there. Our friendly greeters will meet you at the door and answer any questions you have.

Weekly services:

Sunday 9.30am: Traditional NZ Anglican Worship

This is a comfortable, family-friendly feeling service, although it follows the traditional
liturgical format. The service order alternates between the three ANZPB Eucharistic (communion)
liturgies. There is always a sermon with a liturgical assistant leading the worship; when a priest is not available. The communion is led by one of our leaders licenced for reserved sacrament.

Thursday 10.00am: Traditional Communion Service

The service order follows ANZPB with the Sunday sermon being repeated here. Our services are supported by a good tech suite, including two large monitors installed at the front of the church, and a quality sound system.

Prayer books remain available in the pews for anyone who prefers to use them

Who we are: A congregation of faithful followers of our Lord Jesus Christ in the heart of Trentham. We gather in a historic Anglican church, founded in 1863 and continuously used for worship since then, providing a place of beauty, sacredness, and stillness. But the church is primarily about people, relationships, and recovery day by day, wherever we live. Our focus is on faith, family, and care for others.

What we do: We seek to nurture our faith, our relationship with God, in various ways. First and foremost, we come to worship and pray together. The Parish seeks to provide a variety of styles of worship to suit the varying needs of parishioners. We also gather in small groups for Bible study and fellowship, have regular community events, and have monthly communion services in Fergusson Rest Home and the Summerset Community Centre.

Weekly services:

Sunday 10.00am: Communion in the church with children’s ministry

Our Sunday inter-generational service unites families, young and old, in the church, while our children’s program (Godly Play) offers meaningful spiritual education for our tamariki. We gather for morning tea in and around the entry foyer afterwards.

Wednesday 10.00am: Liturgy of the Word with Holy Communion in the church

In addition to the Sunday service, there are other opportunities for worship during the week, such as the Wednesday 10am Holy Communion. This is in the church and uses one of the services in A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare. We gather for morning tea in the foyer afterwards.

Weekdays 7.00am: Morning Prayer

Morning Prayeris held in the church chapel every weekday morning at 7am. We use A New Zealand Prayer Book He Karakia Mihinare, but there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to join the time of intercession and thanksgiving at the end of this service. All ages are welcome.

Upper Hutt Uniting provides Presbyterian – Methodist church services each Sunday at 10am at the Wesley Centre (Te Whanau Lounge) located at 1 Benzie Avenue. We are fortunate to have a revolving preaching team, of both Ordained and Lay Preachers, who offer an interesting and different variety of relaxed preaching styles.
