1080 aerial drop in Pākuratahi Forest during May

Greater Wellington Regional Council

I know that this isn’t clear about which day or date the operation is going to be carried out. If / When Greater Wellington releases more information closer to the time, I’ll update the article. – Cheers, Ben Knowles, Editor / Operator @ The Upper Hutt Connection

Our region is home to some of our most precious native taonga*.

To control the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB) in possums and to protect our native biodiversity, OSPRI will be undertaking predator control work in the Northern Remutaka Ranges in May.

An aerial application of sodium fluoroacetate (1080) will be taking place in parts of Greater Wellington’s Pākuratahi Forest and Wainuiomata Regional Park. These areas will be closed for the day while this operation is underway. Following the operation, areas near the drop zone will have restrictions in place on dog access and hunting for six months.

At least five days prior to the operation, non-toxic, tan-coloured cereal pellets will be spread by helicopter as a pre-feed, parks will not be closed during this process.

Closure confirmation will not be available until the day of the operation and the decision to go ahead is based on suitable weather conditions. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for updates.
