Upper Hutt Petanque defends the Jacques Cochonnett trophy against Naenae

Upper Hutt Petanque Club

Naenae Petanque Club hosted a challenge for the Jacques Cochonnett trophy from current holders Upper Hutt, on Sunday 23rd November 2025 at their Naenae terrain. In the 1st round, Upper Hutt took all three games. The 2nd round was not so one-sided for the holders, Naenae taking the Singles and Doubles, making it 4-2 to Upper Hutt, who then needed only 1 win from the 3rd round to retain the trophy. Not to be complacent, Upper Hutt continued to focus and took all three games, reaching an overall score of 7 games to 2, the 20th consecutive win and 19th defence for this magnificent trophy.

The Upper Hutt team consisted of Mary Khalil (singles and 2-1), Dave Gwerder and Brian Smith (doubles and 2-1), and Derek Worsley, Julian Teni and Linda Brown (triples and 3-0). The Naenae team consisted of Bruce Stephenson (singles), Terry Coleman and Simon Grant (doubles), and Michael Rocks, Lee Mathewman and Peter van Heusden (triples).

The next challenge is from Masterton and will again be away for Upper Hutt in the New Year.
