Upper Hutt Petanque Club has retained the Jacques Cochonnet trophy after a spirited challenge from Horowhenua Petanque Club (Levin) played on our home ground at Maidstone Park on Saturday 17th May 2025. A most enjoyable 9 games were played and whilst a couple of them were very close, Upper Hutt won all 9. Whilst most tournaments play timed games (fixed length, typically 50m or 1hr) the JC Trophy games are untimed and only end when one team reaches 13 points. The first of the Triples games finished after 2hr 10m which is extreme, without even a toilet break. Thankfully the next two were much quicker as everyone was getting hungry. The Upper Hutt team was Brian Smith, Adrienne Gwerder and Colin Gooch (Triples), Mary Khalil and Derek Worsley (Doubles) and Dave Gwerder (Singles). The Horowhenua team was Susan Robertson, Marie Jones and Mel Stevens (Triples), Gavin Jones and Adele Legge (Doubles), and Pat Fotheringham (Singles).
This was the twelfth challenge for the trophy since Upper Hutt won it in November 2023.
