Naenae Open Doubles was held on Saturday 1st November at the Naenae Bowling Club, sponsored by Ray White, with the raffle prize donated by Pak ‘n Save. 18 doubles teams took part and played 3 random 50m games before a lunch break, at which point 5 groups of teams were created based on the then ranking order. Semi-finals for each group resulted in 2 teams going into the final in each group except the bottom order group. Finals were then played to obtain a winner and runner-up in each group. Three members of Upper Hutt made it into the top 4 semi-finals, Dave and Adrienne Gwerder, and Derek Worsley (teamed with Lee Mathewman, the Naenae club captain). However, only Derek and Lee went on to the final and faced Linley Wistrand and Shirley McDonald. The boules flew straight and true and Derek and Lee won the game. Their team name was appropriately “LeeDer” and they were presented with the prize by Bruce Stephenson, president of Naenae Petanque Club.
Thanks to Naenae for a great day’s play with great weather. Unfortunately a few top level players were unable to attend this year due to committments at National tournaments.
