Naenae College beat St Pat’s at the second “Kilikiti at the Basin” event last Saturday. The first kilikiti event in New Zealand happened at the Basin last year. This year featured more teams, youth teams, and two female teams.

Kilikiti, also known as Samoan Cricket came about after Christian missionaries introduced Cricket to the Samoans, but lacking the willow trees of which cricket bats are usually made from, the Samoans adapted it to put their own spin on the game. The bats used in Kilikiti are the three-sided Samoan war club, the LapaLapa, and the ball is made from pandanus leaves (Pandanus a species of palm tree).
