In the final days of the Second World War in Europe, Bonhoeffer is in prison following a failed assassination attempt on German leader, Adolf Hitler. The film then focuses on the events of his life which built up to this point, and shortly after his eventual hanging by Nazi soldiers.
After spending some time in the United States giving him a different view of how Christian services can be conducted by visiting an African American church, Bonhoeffer returns to Germany shocked with how quickly things have changed in the church during his absence, where the Nazi party has taken control of how the German church is run. With him and others with feelings about how the church is now operating, he becomes a spy travelling to Britain to inform the British church leaders of what is happening in Germany.
Eventually, deciding that it is God’s calling, he takes part in an assassination plot against Adolf Hitler which ultimately lands him in prison…
