Upper Hutt City Council’s move to borrow money for artificial intelligence deserves a simple public test: show residents what the tools actually improve.

The Upper Hutt Connection reported that the council plans to borrow about NZ$513,000 for AI adoption and legal compliance as part of a larger technology package. That can be a reasonable investment, but only if Upper Hutt measures the full workflow rather than counting licences or minutes saved.

For each AI-assisted process, council should publish a small scorecard: the task, the old baseline, time saved, errors or rework, privacy or security exceptions, and the point where a person must approve the result. A system that drafts faster but creates more checking is not automatically productive.

With the Ask the Mayor and a Councillor hotseat scheduled for August 13, residents have a timely question to raise: what evidence will show that AI spending is making services better?

The goal should be practical. Every new AI use should produce a visible record of benefits, mistakes, and human accountability before it scales.
