Y Central confirmed on Wednesday that its gym on Somme Road will be closing in late October 2025 after serving more than 20 years to the community, due to changing circumstances beyond their control. While the gym may be closing, the Y Central’s work to create opportunities for healthy living, youth development, social responsibility, and family wellbeing will continue across the region.
Plans are in development to celebrate the impact Y Central has had over the past two decades before the closure in October. These will include opportunities for members and supporters to share stories, memories, and to farewell the facility.
Anthony De Rose, the YMCA Central CEO, mentioned that Y Central exists to serve their people, not profit. Partly due to the generosity of Malcolm Gillies and Kevin Melville who own NZCIS and their gym premises, they’ve been able to keep costs low for their users. However, due to the changing circumstances, they can no longer continue to provide their services from this facility.
