Upper Hutt to get its own weather station

Upper Hutt to get its own weather station

A weather station, 10 meters high, has begun construction at St. Joseph’s School in Upper Hutt.

Daniel Talbot started the crowd funded project in July 2017, the reason for it being that Upper Hutt has it’s own different weather patterns from the rest of the Wellington Region due to the Stokes Valley gorge.

The initial cost was planned to be $20,000 however this increased once Metservice became involved in the project. The Wellington community have helped reduce the cost of the project through sponsorship, donating $70,000. This has greatly reduced the overall cost which would otherwise be over $150,000.

The money raised has gone towards the weather instruments which are made by Vaisala, a company in Finland, which also makes instruments for NASA.

Sponsors are still being sought out for the funding to finish the web development side of things, as well as the phone app.

    1. No idea. All the information I have came from the five minutes or so segment on TVNZ’s Breakfast.
