Greyhound racing ends on Saturday, leaving about 1500 dogs needing new homes. A five‑year transition programme is in place, though rehoming may finish sooner.

Upper Hutt resident Julia Gray adopted two greyhounds in the past month. She first took home Sam, then later adopted Dream. Sam never raced; Dream raced more than 100 times and won 13. Sam adjusted quickly; Dream is still timid and settling in.

Nightrave Greyhounds co‑director Rachel Rae said hundreds of dogs will require adoption. She said greyhounds are calm, low‑energy pets suited to busy families.

Wellington resident Marcus Jackson adopted former racer Ben last week. He is following the 3‑3‑3^* adjustment rule and says Ben is still startled by buses. He also noted the practical aspect of buying clothing for greyhounds.

Gray encouraged others to adopt, saying greyhounds are quiet, low‑shedding, and need minimal exercise.
