During the summer, acoustic monitoring recorded the bats in the Pākuratahi River area, just south of the Remutaka Hill Road, and which joins Te Awa Kairangi (the Hutt River) at Kaitoke Regional Park. This is the first time that the short-tailed bats have been detected in the Wellington Region within the past seven years.

The monitoring will help Greater Wellington Regional Council, letting them know the size and spread of the short-tailed bat population. This information will also play a part in future pest management in the area, and Greater Wellington Regional Council’s collaborative work with the Department of Conservation.
