A Journey to Bethlehem

Every year a church in Upper Hutt turns their centre into a Bethlehem village; where people can Journey back 2000 years ago to the Manager… to Christmas eve, the night that changed the world forever.

People young and old walked through the streets of Bethlehem, past the boats on the shores of Galilee to the Manger. Visitors experienced the stable animals (there are baby lambs, goats, rabbits and a donkey as well as pony rides), a real-life manger scene, wise men and shepherds, together with a choir of angels. People were able to visit a traditional Bethlehem workshop with Joseph, a real life potter, bake their own baker and rest at the watering well to have their feet washed, as well a traditional fishing village, oil perfumery and florist. At each tent they made their own craft such as a bead bracelet, a jar of space, an oil of perfume and a clay pot and they have a chance to have their own photo taken in the manager, toast marshmallows with the shepherds and bake bread.

This is a large event spanning over 1000m2 and over the last 7 years, over 1500 people attend each year.
Leanne Wickham, of Heretaunga Christian Centre says ‘this is a great way for people to experience what it might have been like on the night Jesus was born and takes us back to the original Christmas, away from the stress and consumerism of the season.’

The Christmas Story , ran at Heretaunga Community Church, 51 Lane Street, Upper Hutt. Friday 12th December 6-9pm, Saturday 13th December 6-9pm and Sunday 14th December 10am – noon.
