Upper Hutt is currently under a Strong Wind Warning (Orange) and a Heavy Rain Watch. It’s time to do a quick “once-over” of your property to keep everyone safe!
MetService is forecasting severe gales with gusts reaching up to 130 km/h in exposed places, starting this evening and continuing through Monday afternoon.
For households that have rubbish and recycling collection tomorrow, avoid putting out the bins tonight. Please do so tomorrow morning before 7AM.
Key times to watch:
- Strong winds: Tonight from 6:00 PM through to 3:00 PM Monday.
- Heavy rain: Developing this afternoon, peaking tonight and tomorrow morning.
Your checklist
- Secure the yard: Tie down trampolines, wheelie bins, and outdoor furniture before they become “UFOs.”
- Clear the drains: Check your gutters and the street drain out front to prevent surface flooding.
- Power up: Keep phones and power banks charged in case the wind affects local power lines.
- Drive safe: If you’re heading over the Remutaka Hill or driving a high-sided vehicle, please take extra care.
- Look out for one another: If you have elderly neighbors or folks who might struggle with heavy bins or securing their property, please give them a quick hand or a “thumbs up” to make sure they’re set. A little help goes a long way in our community!
Keep an eye on the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office and MetService New Zealand Facebook pages for live updates or changes to these warnings.
Stay dry and stay safe, everyone!
