Strong Community Interest in New Citizens’ Panel

Strong Community Interest in New Citizens’ Panel

Upper Hutt City Council

Council’s recent invitation to join a new Citizens’ Panel has sparked strong interest, with almost 300 residents expressing their willingness to be involved so far.

An invitation to join online was sent out at the start of July to individuals who have previously engaged with Council through our Let’s Korero platform.

The Citizens’ Panel will serve as an additional channel for community feedback, supporting our decision-making with insights gathered through surveys, and eventually, focus groups, and in-person discussions.

“This is a valuable opportunity for Council to hear directly from a broad cross-section of our community and adds to our engagement platforms,” says Chief Executive Geoff Swainson.

“It’s encouraging to see such strong interest, and it tells us our community is ready and willing to be involved in meaningful conversations about the city’s future.

“We will continue to encourage members of our community to sign up. We can never have too much local input into our decision-making processes.”

The Panel is being designed to reflect the diversity of Upper Hutt, with members selected to ensure a broad range of perspectives and experiences. It is not intended to replace formal consultation; instead, it will provide additional information that we may not have received through more formal channels.

Council staff will now begin the next phase of planning, using the expressions of interest to shape the formation process.

Updates will be shared as the Citizens’ Panel continues to take shape.
