In a powerful display of kotahitanga (unity), the Upper Hutt community came together over the weekend to protect one another through a free flu vaccination event that highlighted the strength of collective action. The event, hosted by Health New Zealand – Asian Health Services, was part of the national “Stay Well This Winter” campaign and brought together local organisations, ethnic communities, and public health providers in a shared mission to support the wellbeing of all. With support from Tū Ora Compass Health, Kōkiri Marae, Upper Hutt City Council, and a wide array of ethnic and cultural groups including Bharatiya Samaj, Malaysian communities, the Nepalese Culture & Tourism Promotion Forum, Luo community, Punjabi community, NZNSI, Asian Family Services, and members of the Chinese media, the event was a resounding success.

Over the course of the day, eligible residents received free flu vaccinations, supporting community-wide protection against seasonal illness. The strong turnout demonstrated the trust in public health and the value of culturally inclusive engagement.
“This wasn’t just a vaccination event—it was a coming together of our diverse communities, united in care,” said Ramil Adhikari, one of the organisers. “From our volunteers to the performers, health providers to community leaders, every contribution was a step toward building a healthier, stronger Upper Hutt.”
As we head into the colder months, flu vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves and those around us—especially vulnerable populations such as tamariki, kaumātua, and those with chronic conditions.
Let’s stay well together this winter.
