Some visual history of the Remutaka tunnel

An article was put up in October that the Wairarapa line would be closed for 46 days from the 26th of December to the 10th of February 2025 for “essential maintenance”. Part of this essential maintenance is replacing the track which was first laid back in 1955!

For the history buffs out there, these photos from Upper Hutt City Library’s heritage collection shows Remutaka Tunnel while it was being constructed and on its opening ceremony.
