Road news for motorists in Lower Hutt next week

Te Awa Kairangi – Delivering RiverLink

What’s happening next week? Read on to find out more!

We’ve had another busy week in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai / Lower Hutt, our ecologists have been out on site checking for nesting birds within our construction area, we’ve set up more environmental controls to protect the awa/river, including starting the construction of sediment ponds (more on what these are and why they’re so important next week), we’re continuing to relocate underground services (electricity, water gas etc), the new lane layout has been completed on Rutherford St following the removal of the roundabout, and from the State Highway you can see the large scale earthworks underway.

Short-term activities that might impact your travel next week include:

  • Sunday 25 January – Thursday 12 February 7pm -5.30am, Wellington Electricity night works on Rutherford St between Queens Drive and Melling Road. No work will take place on Friday / Saturday nights or on public holidays.
  • Monday 26 January until March (24/7), Wellington Electricity works will CLOSE the Ewen Bridge on ramp and a single lane across the bridge into the city. During the work buses will be diverted onto Aglionby St, Bridge St, Leary St & Herbert St. Some parking will need to be removed to do that safely. Drivers from Petone, this means you will need to either change your route and use Hutt Road / Railway Avenue to access Lower Hutt, or travel under Railway Avenue, onto Marsden St, and then turn left on to Railway Avenue from Aglionby, Herbert or Parliament Sts. Please follow the diversion signs and any instructions given by the traffic management crews. Walkers and cyclists, footpaths on both sides crossing Ewen Bridge will remain open.
  • ongoing Wellington Electricity works on Marsden St, Market Grove and Connolly St and Rutherford St.

  • Melling Station including the car park and the Melling Park & Ride facilities are CLOSED. The train now begins and ends at Western Hutt, with extra parking available at Petone Station. For other travel options visit: www.metlink.org.nz/mellingstation
  • Pharazyn Street is CLOSED from near Marsden Street to Block Road until approximately 2029
  • Block Road and the pedestrian crossing from Tirohanga Rd over SH2 to Block Rd are permanently CLOSED. Please note there is also a minor temporary footpath diversion in place between Melling Bridge and the pedestrian crossing over SH2 to Harbour View Rd. The new (and more direct) path will open later next week.Sourc
