Porirua City Council is including a non-binding referendum at this year’s local election regarding the amalgamation of Wellington’s councils, and Hutt City Council is considering the same. What is Upper Hutt’s opinion on this?

Porirua City Council agreed to ask the question from their communities in a meeting on the 29th of May – the reason being as they were already including a Māori ward referendum anyway. Lower Hutt Mayor, Campbell Barry said he would bring a decision on whether to add a non-binding referendum question to the local election ballot at a council meeting next month.

The text will read. “Should Hutt City Council work with councils in Wellington, Upper Hutt, Porirua and the Wellington Regional Council to explore the possibility of creating one single council, that combines relevant services and functions regionally, while keeping appropriate local services and decision making local?”
