Yesterday morning, we celebrated the completion of Whakawhirinaki Silverstream Pipe Bridge with an official karakia ceremony.
We were honoured to have our local mana whenua iwi Te Ātiawa lead a moving karakia, noting the significance of Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River to iwi and our region.
Our deputy board chair Bill Bayfield cut the ribbon together with Greater Wellington councillor Ros Connelly and Upper Hutt mayor Peri Zee yesterday as part of the ceremony.
Built to withstand flooding and major earthquakes, this new pipe bridge carries 60 million litres of drinking water to Porirua and almost half of Wellington City.
What started as a pipe bridge construction in early 2023 is now a vital part of the drinking water network and provides walking and cycling opportunities for locals and visitors.
Ka pai to everyone involved in the project for the great mahi – this project is a real testament to the team’s skill, collaboration, and dedication!
Check out the pipe bridge if you’re in the area – take a close look at this impressive water infrastructure and admire Te Awa Kairangi where our water comes from!
