We’re proposing extending the 80km/h speed limit zone on State Highway 2 in Upper Hutt south by two kilometres, through the Moonshine Hill Road intersection to Riverstone Terraces.
The consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 12 September 2025. Take the survey on our website: https://nzta.mysocialpinpoint.com/sh2-moonshine-hill-road-north-whakatiki-street-speed-review
This proposed reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h on SH2, from Moonshine Hill Road to north of Whakatiki St, requires public consultation under the Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024. We’ll consider safety, technical assessments, cost-benefit analysis, and your feedback before we make a decision.
The intersection of SH2 and Moonshine Hill Road is high-risk. Alongside the proposed speed change that would make travelling through the intersection safer, we’re going to upgrade the intersection by installing traffic lights to make it safer to turn, reduce the risk of crashes, and improve safety for people cycling. The traffic lights we’re installing aren’t part of the speed consultation.
