As you may or may not know, I make the occasional video game as a hobby using the Rpg Maker development system. These games are appropriate for most players aged 12+, any objectionable content is just low level animated violence, and the very occasional and very mild coarse language (only like 1 or 2 instances). Each game probably takes about 12 hours to complete, though A Grim Tale is a significantly shorter adventure.
If you are interested in developing your own games like these, you should check out Steam as they have their winter sale on right now, up until the 2nd of January 2025. Rpg Maker MV is 85% off – $17.24 instead of the usual $115 which makes it excellent value for money. https://store.steampowered.com/app/363890/RPG_Maker_MV/. Note that these games of mine were developed using the most recent version, RPG Maker MZ.

A Celestial Weapon: MZ Edition

Soldaria, a militaristic nation which has been at war with it’s peace-loving neighbour Senecia for the last 30 years.
One night, the resident skeptic of the Soldarian capital city of Canaburg, Sophie, sees an object fall out of the night sky. The official government reports say that this was simply a meteor, but naturally, Sophie doesn’t believe a word of that. With her friend and fellow skeptic, James, and their new friend who just happens to work for the government, Vincent – they soon find in the government archives that this was indeed no meteor. This was a sabotage act by Soldarian agents!
With this knowledge, and the designs for the information obtained from such an act, Sophie and her friends make their way to Senecia as quick as they can. Can they warn the Senecian government of what is to come, before the beautiful, but equally cruel General Felchers can turn her sun-gun or heliobeam upon Senecia? Destroying them for nothing but her cruel satisfaction?

Every Vote Counts (a “kind of a” sequel to A Celestial Weapon)

Amonena, a country with a very strange constitution.
Due to a strange loophole in Amonena’s constitution, a cat has been elected as their head of state. When that law was passed, nobody ever thought that someone would nominate an animal as Prime Minister, and when the cat was sworn in, nobody seemed to care. However, things have now gone downhill in the corridors of parliament.
Now nobody can see the Prime Minister, they can only see it’s deputy, Weston. The person who nominated the cat in a moment of apathy has also realised their mistake, and decides to head to parliament to talk with the leader of the opposition, Penny Bradelgast. Simply to offer their services… of course, they’d never tell Miss. Bradelgast that THEY were the one who nominated that cat in the first place!

Saving the Planet: 90’s Style

Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Ice!… Lightning…? Wait a minute, that doesn’t seem right. I’m sure there were only five, Heart was in there somewhere, and isn’t there supposed to be a Captain in all this?
Six young adults have been entrusted with six elemental rings from the planet. These six have great concern for the planet when the rest of the world has become largely blasé to the whole idea. While most are just going about living their normal lives, there are a few out there who only see the world, and those that they can exploit, as things for their own financial gain.
These villains include:
- Forest Laisey: An elderly man who runs a carbon offsets business but for some reason every tree he plants only withers and dies.
- Lassaye Faire: An architect who’s notorious for doing her buildings on the cheap, cutting corners and then pocketing the difference.
- Looten… er, Fraude Shakedon: Owns the electric vehicle company, Shakedown Motors. The rich all over the world want to buy his electric cars, but these profits never help the workers. His workers are lucky to live to see their first pay check.
- Crypticia Feede: A skilled business woman who has acquired all but the most independent of the food and apparel industries on the planet.
- Faik Doubledeal: The world’s most famous spokesman. Tells lesser developed countries what to do, when his country isn’t doing it.
- Deceitia Greene: Runs the company DG Petrochemicals. She has a love for the environment but something really seems to bothering her lately. And that has been impacting her ability to keep any oil spills which come from her wells and refineries under control.

A Grim Tale

Is your kingdom running low in the money department? Take a leaf out of Queen Amanda’s book and begin rounding up all the adventurers. Paying those rewards is a big drain which can be easily fixed by simply making the trade of being an adventurer a crime worth a life sentence in the royal dungeons.
Being rudely awakened by the guards in the royal city of Berylustyr, the white mage, Gary, is issued a quest by her highness, Queen Amanda, to help a mentally disturbed man in a far away village. Along the way, he finds a talkative black mage, and shortly after, a knight and warrior monk join the fray, having taken up a post to find a missing prince, from a notice board at a pub… If this guy is royalty, then why didn’t the Queen announce this publicly?
