Kim Hina operates Hangout, a safe place for youth to hang out each Thursday night at the Salvation Army on Fegusson Drive. The rules are simple: no vaping, no smokes, no drugs, and no alcohol.
Kim started Hangout eight years ago when her daughter was struggling with mental health, and a close friend of her daughter’s was struggling even worse. The main problem is, when it comes to mental health counseling is how long the wait list is, the wait is around eight weeks.
It was a social worker’s advice that inspired her to set up Hangout: Listening and caring is crucial to helping. Hang Out provides just that.
