From kite making to weaving: Celebrating Matariki 2024

Upper Hutt City Council

What a celebration!

Our Matariki 2024 workshops lit up Upper Hutt with creativity, connection, and culture. From Manu Aute (kite making) to Raranga (weaving), people of all ages came together to explore mātauranga Māori through hands-on experiences.

Our kite-making workshop on 18 June soared as the most popular event, drawing attendees from across the region. With four sessions fully booked and glowing feedback, it’s clear the community loved the welcoming vibe, expert facilitators, and rich cultural storytelling.

We heard you: more workshops, longer sessions and better signage. We’re already excited for what next year will bring!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part, supported, or spread the word. Matariki 2024 was a beautiful reminder of what we can create when we come together.
