James Wiki Henry was sentenced to 23 months in jail in Wellington District Court on Tuesday. Charges laid included endangering transport, driving while forbidden, failing to stop to ascertain injury, failing to remain stopped, reckless driving, and several counts of shop lifting.

The offending happened in January last year, where he rammed a police car after road spikes were being laid while fleeing police. He used Z-spikes to deflate the tires of two other police cars that were pursuing him, until he fled his vehicle and was caught in Silverstream.

The incident is similar to that which resulted in the death of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming in Nelson. The police officer in this incident didn’t die from the injuries, but it did lead to them leaving the police force.
