CCTV footage from Rimutaka Prison showing a group assault has been leaked online, prompting a Corrections investigation.
The video shows several prisoners kicking, punching and stomping another inmate. One uses a crutch as a weapon. Officers enter shortly after and assist the victim.
Police say the assault occurred on 23 September last year. Five people are charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Corrections is investigating how the footage was released. Deputy commissioner Neil Beales says the victim was treated onsite, then taken to hospital, and returned to prison on 27 September.
He says the incident was referred to police and all evidence, including CCTV, was provided as part of standard procedure.
Beales says prisons are volatile environments and staff safety remains a priority. He notes investment in training, body armour, on‑body cameras and pepper spray, along with a violence‑reduction programme developed with CANZ and the PSA.
All prison sites have individual safety plans addressing violence and aggression.
