Changes made to the Akatārawa Cemetery expansion project

As we move into the detailed design phase of the Akatārawa Cemetery expansion, we’re making key adjustments to ensure the project meets future demand while minimising environmental impact.

What’s new?

  • Updated site surveys revealed differences in topography and ecology, prompting adjustments to the original 2017 plan.
  • The access road has been rerouted to reduce environmental impact, thanks to the discovery of an existing road.
  • Some development areas have been reduced based on the new ecological insights.
  • The project will extend capacity for burials and ashes interments by 42 more years.

What’s next?

  • Resource consent will be lodged late November 2024.
  • We’re ensuring the expansion fits the needs of our communities, including space for natural burials and cultural requirements.
