As we move into the detailed design phase of the Akatārawa Cemetery expansion, we’re making key adjustments to ensure the project meets future demand while minimising environmental impact.
What’s new?
- Updated site surveys revealed differences in topography and ecology, prompting adjustments to the original 2017 plan.
- The access road has been rerouted to reduce environmental impact, thanks to the discovery of an existing road.
- Some development areas have been reduced based on the new ecological insights.
- The project will extend capacity for burials and ashes interments by 42 more years.
What’s next?
- Resource consent will be lodged late November 2024.
- We’re ensuring the expansion fits the needs of our communities, including space for natural burials and cultural requirements.
