At a very emotional and historical event, our outgoing Mayor, Wayne Guppy’s contribution was recognised and celebrated at Orongomai Marae last Friday. The event was hosted by Malcolm Gillies and Mark Crofsky and included high profile government MPs, regional mayors, and community representatives, representing the profile and national influence he has wielded, ensuring Upper Hutt’s influence in the region and nationally. The respect for his leadership was acknowledged by the Marae trustees who celebrated his governance role over the years.
After 24 years at the helm, Wayne has shaped the city in ways few leaders could ever do. During his tenure, the city has renewed its community facilities, encouraged new and vibrant businesses to locate, and enhanced our grass roots community organisations, not just the sports, but also in the arts, culture, wellbeing, diversity and history. Amongst the 250 attendees at the event were representatives from all communities and interests paying tribute.
Wayne took over the reins from Rex Kirton at the beginning of the new century, an extraordinary record of public service and stepping into some big shoes. Now Wayne has made his own contribution to our history.
Special highlights must include the redevelopment of the pool complex which is serving a wide range of people of all ages and communities. In addition, the new business developments at Brewtown, NZCIS, at Wallaceville, the film studio at Lane Street to name just a few. And even today new employers are moving in. Culturally Upper Hutt has changed over the last decades, with a growing and multicultural population.
