Busses are to replace weekday off-peak trains on the Hutt Valley line from August through November to allow for rail upgrades. In the 2025 budget, more than $143 million was allocated for rail renewals in Auckland and Wellington. Wairarapa services will also be affected with busses replacing trains between Upper Hutt and Wellington.
The work undertaken will include replacing large sections of sleepers, the railway lines, and repairing the Ava bridge.
This work is necessary as significant disruption is expected on State Highway 2 during the construction of the Melling interchange, so it will be crucial for passengers to have reliable train services into Wellington City at that time.
The Melling interchange project will begin in December.
