With the opening of H2O Xtream Aquatic Centre on 7 April 2025 Council have made the decision not to reinstate the zebra crossing on Blenheim Street just south of the intersections of Fergusson Drive and Martin Street.
The crossing was painted over with black roadmaking paint on 2 November 2023 after the footpath was closed on the south side of Fergusson Drive for the pool upgrade.
We need to look into a few concerns about where this zebra crossing is placed, including:
1. There are already multiple other crossing facilities close by to provide connection to the city
2. The current location has limiting factors that impact the safety, suitability, functionality and sightlines, particularly how close it is to the roundabout and vehicles driving to/from Martin St.
3. Traffic islands were removed to make way for work on Blenheim Street, including drainage, roadworks, and the construction of H2O Xtream. These islands also made it hard for heavy traffic to turn from Fergusson Drive north into Blenheim Street, causing damage to the kerb and island. They haven’t been put back yet to allow time to figure out the best road layout and ensure the zebra crossing is safe. Pedestrian demand will play a big role in the final decision..
As any potential works have not been included in the LTP we are looking at the funding options available once the investigation has been completed.
