As the golden hues of summer linger over New Zealand, a warm February evening on the 10th of February 2025 set the perfect stage for a night of diplomacy, cultural exchange, and heartfelt connections. The Nepalese Culture and Tourism Promotion Forum Nepal together with Tourism Board (NTB) reception, held in Upper Hutt, was more than just an elegant gathering—it was an intersection where tradition met modern aspirations, where alliances were forged over heartfelt conversations, and where the spirit of Nepal resonated through song, dance, and camaraderie.

Dr. Ramil Adhikary, President of the Nepal Culture and Tourism Promotion Forum, orchestrated a flawless evening that seamlessly blended elegance with purpose. Against a backdrop of twilight and the soulful sounds of a three-piece jazz band, dignitaries, community leaders, and cultural ambassadors shared more than pleasantries. This event was a carefully curated opportunity to strengthen international ties, foster city-to-city relationships, and celebrate the Nepalese heritage that continues to thrive in New Zealand. He embodies the spirit of service, whether officiating marriage ceremonies or championing the rights of ethnic minorities. But tonight’s focus was not on his accolades but rather on the collective effort to ensure that heritage is not something left behind but carried forward into the future.

Voices That Echo Beyond Borders
Mayor Wayne Guppy, a stalwart leader with two decades of service, set the tone for the evening with his warm, inclusive address. His ability to bring diverse communities together was evident as he moved through the crowd, engaging in heartfelt conversations that reinforced his deep appreciation for multiculturalism. His presence underscored the strong relationship between Nepalese and Kiwi communities.
Alexander E. Hillary, grandson of the legendary Sir Edmund Hillary, took to the podium with youthful energy and a deep reverence for Nepal. He spoke of the country’s majestic landscapes and its welcoming people, sharing his plans to explore Nepal not as an heir to a legacy but as an adventurer drawn to its timeless charm. His words painted a vivid picture of the nation that had captivated his grandfather’s heart.
Kamal Prasad Shrestha, a key figure in fostering Nepalese culture in New Zealand, recounted his journey since arriving in 1997 and the invaluable guidance he received from Sir Edmund Hillary and June Mulgrew. His dedication to promoting multicultural harmony shone through as he reflected on the enduring friendship between Nepal and New Zealand.
Legacy in Action: The Next Generation Steps Up
Beyond the speeches and formalities, the evening carried a deeper message—one of passing down values through generations. Dr. Adhikary’s young son, Ansh, demonstrated the power of generosity, willingly sharing his savings to support children in need. His daughter, Prableen, continues to embrace both Nepali and English, understanding that language is a bridge to identity and belonging.
The night was crowned with mesmerizing dance performances by Sampada and Sambridi Bhattarai, guided by their father, Laxman Bhattarai. Their movements, steeped in humility and pride, embodied the deep connection between heritage and modern identity.

As messages from NTB CEO Deepak Raj Joshi and Nepal’s Deputy Head of Mission in Canberra, Kul Bahadur Magar, were read out, the evening came to a heartfelt conclusion. Dr. Adhikary expressed his sincere gratitude to Mayor Guppy, esteemed diplomats, and all attendees, reaffirming the power of culture to unite hearts across borders.
A Vibrant Tapestry of Multiculturalism

The event is a testament to the multicultural essence of New Zealand. Beyond the Nepalese heritage being celebrated, performances from diverse communities fill the evening with color and rhythm. Chinese cultural performances captivate with their grace and precision, the African Luo community adds their mesmerizing drumming and storytelling traditions, and Indian semi-classical dance weaves a tale of elegance and devotion. The fusion of cultures turns the evening into a true celebration of unity through diversity.

On this night, in this corner of the world, the Nepalese community stood tall—not just as immigrants but as proud carriers of a legacy that continues to grow, flourish, and inspire.
