Greyhounds will be taking to the Wellington waterfront that morning and Upper Hutt that afternoon. They are two of more than 20 walks happening across the country as part of this year’s annual Great Global Greyhound Walk, with participants from Whangārei to Dunedin collectively aiming to cover 3,000 kilometres in a single day to raise awareness of the breed and support the nationwide adoption drive.

This year’s walk comes at a significant time for greyhound rehoming in New Zealand. Following the end of greyhound racing, 1,249 greyhounds began the transition from racing to life as pets.

The walks are free, open to everyone and there will be plenty happening on the day. This year’s Great Global Greyhound Walk theme is Mythical Mutts, with greyhounds and their humans encouraged to dress up for the occasion, from dragons and unicorns to fairies and mermaids. Many walks will also feature games, giveaways and prizes.
