Club Objective
“Perform, enjoy and promote country music for the benefit of all Club members and the wider community”
About us
The Upper Hutt Country Music Club Incorporated was founded in 1976 and is a non-profit organisation.
The Club was formed by a handful of local country music enthusiasts who sought to create a club for like-minded members of the community. The Club has grown, both membership-wise and metaphorically, over the years, and has earned the nickname of “The Friendly Club”
Anyone who is interested in country music whether singing, playing or just listening is more than welcome to attend. The Club prides itself on being a family oriented club and children are more than welcome.
What is country music?
Trying to define country music is a bit like asking how long a piece of string is. Even among country music artists and aficionados there is no consensus about what it is that makes country music the unique but constantly evolving music genre that it is.
Often associated with melancholy lamenting of misfortune, country music is much more than this. In 2006 Rascal Flatts released a tongue-in-cheek song called ’Backwards’ where, if you sing a country song in reverse, ’… you get your house back, your dog back, your best friend, Jack, back…’
Songs from both traditional and, more recently, modern country artists such as Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus (to name but a few) are also testament to the lively toe tapping nature of country music. Even Lily Allen has delved into country music with her song, ’It’s Not Fair’.
At the end of the day, if it sounds like country music, and is played on traditional country instruments, then it probably is country music.
