(Question 1)
Does your Party support retaining the eligibility age for New Zealand Superannuation at 65?
National
National will have a superannuation policy closer to the election. We don’t support changing the entitlement of those currently receiving super.
If re-elected, National will require employers to maintain matching KiwiSaver contributions for any employees over 65, recognising that more New Zealanders are continuing to work beyond this age and shouldn’t lose out simply for having a birthday.
Greens
Yes. We will retain NZ Superannuation as a universal entitlement from age 65.
Labour
Labour has been clear that it will not means test New Zealand superannuation or increase the age of eligibility. While National wants to make Kiwis work hard for longer, we recognise that Kiwis have already worked hard long enough by the time they reach 65.
N Z First
New Zealand First will not support changes to the entitlement or eligibility of New Zealand Superannuation. This position was clearly prioritised in the 2023 Coalition Agreement and will be retained. Universal entitlement and maintenance of the value at 66% of net average wage will also be maintained.
Opportunity Party
Yes.
(Question 2)
Does your party support retaining universal entitlement to New Zealand Superannuation, regardless of income or assets?
National
National supports universal entitlement and will not means test superannuation.
Greens
Yes. We will retain universal entitlement.
Labour
As above.
N Z First
As above.
Opportunity Party
Yes, although our Citizens’ Income policy aims to eventually integrate NZ Superannuation with our Universal Citizens’ Income. This is set at a lower rate, but would need to be supplemented for those aged 65+ who are unable to support themselves by supplementing the Citizens’ Income with their KiwiSaver or other savings. The implementation plan for our Tax Reset policy does not contemplate making this change within the next ten years.
(Question 3)
Does your party support maintaining the current rate and indexation of N Z Superannuation? If not, what changes would you make?
National
On April 1 2026, around 960,000 Kiwis receiving NZ Superannuation and Veteran’s Pension benefited from increased payments. NZ Superannuation for a married couple who both qualify lifted more than $50 to $1,708 a fortnight, an increase of over $180 since the 2023 election.
Greens
Yes, we support maintaining the current rate and indexation of N Z Superannuation. We are also open to exploring rate changes to be individualised rather than having a lower rate for people in a relationship.
Labour
As above.
N Z First
As above.
Opportunity Party
Largely. Our tax reset policy supplements the Citizens’ Income for those aged 65+ and makes tax adjustments to ensure our tax changes do not reduce net income for any additional income older people might receive up to $55,000 per year.
