Perhaps it is a family wanting more room, a friend dreaming of a new kitchen, or a neighbour considering a completely new home.
Often, the dream is clear. What is less certain is whether it is achievable, where to begin, and what it could realistically cost.
Now, visitors to the Kāpiti Women’s Expo on Sunday 1 November can enter someone they know, or themselves, in a competition to win a $3,000 Build Smart Experience from Smartway Builders.
The competition is part of Smartway’s involvement as a major sponsor of the Expo, being held at Southward Car Museum.
Helping turn ideas into informed decisions
Smartway Builders developed its Build Smart Experience to help homeowners bridge the gap between having an idea and understanding whether it is practical.
The experience helps homeowners explore their goals, possible design directions, property constraints, project feasibility, and indicative costs before committing heavily to detailed design and consent work.
“Many homeowners have a reasonably clear picture of what they would love to achieve, but they do not necessarily know whether it is practical, what their site or existing home will allow, or whether the likely cost aligns with what they can afford,” says Ann Woolston, co owner of Smartway Builders.
“That uncertainty can stop people progressing for years. Others move ahead with detailed plans before properly exploring the feasibility and financial implications of what they want to build.”
The Build Smart Experience aims to provide greater clarity about what is possible and what it could realistically cost, giving homeowners a more informed starting point for their project.
An opportunity to help someone you know
The competition is not limited to people planning their own renovation or new build.
Expo visitors can also enter for a friend, family member, colleague, or neighbour who could benefit from understanding their options.
No architectural plans are needed to enter, and visitors can nominate someone without having to supply that person’s personal contact details.

How to enter
The competition is being held exclusively at the Kāpiti Women’s Expo, on Sunday 1 November 2026, at Southward Car Museum, Paraparaumu.
Visitors must attend the Expo, find the Smartway Builders stand, and scan the competition QR code to enter.
